As we mark the 160th anniversary of the Buffalo Soldiers, we recognize their important place in American military history. African Americans have fought for this country since the French and Indian War, serving in colonial militias, the Revolution, the War of 1812, and more than 180,000 in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War, yet it was not until 1866 that Congress created the first peacetime all Black Regular Army regiments, the 9th and 10th Cavalry and what became the 24th and 25th Infantry, later named Buffalo Soldiers by Native tribes for their fighting spirit.
