———————————
O’Banion and Torrio’s relationship started to really turn sour after an incident at The Sieben Brewery, a company both men had large investments in. O’Banion gets a tip that the brewery was going to get raided and approached Torrio about selling his part of the business. He claimed that the Genna Brothers were bad for business and he wanted out. Torrio agreed to buy O’Banion out, paying him $500,000, and thought nothing of it. Well, on the day of O’Banion’s last shipment the brewery got raided and a number of gangsters were arrested, including Torrio and O’Banion. Unlike Torrio, O’Banion didn’t have any previous arrest and he would get off easy. Torrio, on the other hand, had to post bail as well as bail out six other associates. In all, Torrio lost his part of the brewery, had to pay bail for him and his associates, PLUS the money he had paid O’Banion. Torrio was fed up and wanted O’Banion dead.

———————————

One day at The Ship O’Banion sat in to tally up the profit from that week’s business activities. It was brought up that Angelo Genna had owed a large tab and Capone suggested that they let it go as courtesy but O’Banion would have nothing of it. He got Angelo on the phone and demanded he pay the tab within a week. The Gennas took this as a huge offense and could no longer restrain themselves from having O’Banion killed.
Shortly after that Merlo had succumb to his illness and Torrio immediately arranged the hit on O’Banion. While in his flower shop, Schofield, Frankie Yale entered, with two other thugs, to arrange the purchase of some flowers for Merlo’s funeral. When Yale grabbed O’Banion’s hand to shake it, the other two stepped to his side and shot O’Banion multiple times, killing him.

How do you believe the North Siders will respond or do you think they will they just let this one slide?

𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝟏:

Born Francesco loele, but known as Frankie Yale, was one of Johnny Torrio’s earlier associates who ran his rackets in New York after he left for Chicago. Torrio introduced Yale into, Manhattan’s based, Five Points Gang at an early age and begin grooming him for a life of crime. Yale was involved in rackets which included running a string of brothels, selling protection, and creating monopolies in Brooklyn’s ice delivery trade. With the money made off of these rackets, Yale opened the Harvard Inn, a bar located on Seaside Walk in Coney Island. Yale started called himself Yale in an attempt to line his name up with the bar’s Ivy League College name. The Harvard Inn is where him and Capone began their association. It’s also the place where Capone received is famous scare before being shipped off to Torrio in Chicago.
Now, over in Chicago, Torrio was having a big problem with O’Banion and The North Gang but wanted to keep the peace so he arranged business agreements over territories. The North Side Gang was given control of up north, which included, the upper class, Gold Coast neighborhood. O’Banion reluctantly agreed and when with the deal for about three years. After that he started becoming uneasy because the South Siders (Torrio-Capone-Gennas-Merlo) had just won a big political election in west suburban or and it became a gold mine for corruption and illegal activities. To pacify O’Banion, Torrio gave him some of Cicero’s beer rights and a quarter interest in a casino called The Hawthorne Smoke Shop, later known as The Ship. This lead O’Banion to convince a number of speakeasies to move their businesses into his territories in Cicero. Torrio tried to get him not to do this because it could cause a bootlegging war and he offered O’Banion a percentage of the brothel money but he would not agree.

Michele “Mike” Merlo was born in Sicily, him and his family immigrated to New Orleans, then came to Chicago at the age of 20. He would get involved with Antonino D’Andrea and become part of the Unione Siciliana. The organization is alleged to have controlled much of the Italian vote in the United States, and had a lot of power.
Merlo became head of the organization after D’Andrea was murdered and he ordered the assassination of his killer.

While Merlo was the president of the Unione Siciliana he gained tremendous political influence over democratic politics AND Chicago’s under world. Although he ordered the assassination D’Andrea’s killer, he was a man of peace and was known for keeping violence down between Chicago gangs.

When Angelo Genna wanted to have O’Banion killed Marlo would not give him the ok because he wanted to keep it cool between the different gangs. This kept the Gennas from killing O’Banion but Marlo suffered from cancer and they didn’t know how long he had to live.

Was Mike Marlo a good guy or a bad guy? Do you believe the Genna’s will continue to honor Marlo’s pledge to peace?

Will reveal all next post..

The Genna crime family was ran by six brothers: Angelo, Antonio, Mike, Vincenzo, Peter, and Sam. They were from Sicily but based their operations from Chicago’s Little Italy neighborhood. Their closest allies were Jonny Torrio, Al Capone, and Anthony D’Andrea.
The family was involved in a number of things, prostitution, illegal gambling, extortion, racketeering, bootlegging, and murder. A little while before prohibition began the brothers received their license to manufacture liquor legally but they would sell it illegally out the backdoor.
When America when dry in 1920 it opened up loads of new business for bootleggers and this started the Gennas to operate outside of their territory into the North Siders territory. This, of course, infuriated O’Banion and he would have none of it.
At first Dean tried to bring the issue up with Johnny Torrio and the boss of Unione Siciliana, Mike Merlo, telling them the brothers were working outside of the agreed upon territories. When nothing was done about it O’Banion took matters into his own hands and began robbing the family of their shipments. Angelo and the rest of the brothers did not like this at all and wanted Dean dead. They approached Torrio and Merlo for permission to put a hit out on O’Banion but Merlo would not grant them the ok.
Where the brothers right for selling the bootlegged liquor on the north side even though it was outside of their territory?
Was O’Banion’s response to the Genna brothers appropriate?

“Hymie the pole” or “Hymie” Weiss was a Chicago native from the north side. He too started his career in crime at a young age, and was involved in quite a few. One that stood out the most is a botched perfume burglary. Weiss is said to have knocked over a shelf of perfume during the burglary, and when he was caught, he smelled of sweet fragrances. This caused the police to dub him “The Perfume Burglar”. Don’t let that sweet smell fool you though, “Hymie” is the only man Capone is allegedly suppose to have feared.
Shortly after the burglary Weiss meets and befriends O’Banion, and though O’Banion he meets Moran. As I stated in my earlier post, the three worked as muscle for a Chicago newspaper company, well they also doubled as salesmen. If a newspaper stand did not want to do business with the company the guys were working for, the boys would rough them up pretty bad.
Capone had good reason to fear “Hymie”. It’s said that Weiss reportedly shot his own brother for bring up the fact that he did not serve his country. It’s also believed the reason behind Weiss’s reckless behavior was the fact that he suffered from cancer and did not expect to live long. Another rumor is that “Hymie” started the quote, “Let’s take him for a ride”, and we all know what that means. 😰
What do you think about “Hymie”? Was he a good addition to the gang?

“Bugs” Moran is originally from St. Paul, Minnesota. He actually had a pretty good up bringing and with pretty decent schooling. However, when he turned 18 things went south. Moran joined a gang and would be arrested for a number of things, including robbery. By the time he was 21 he’d flee to Chicago. When Moran arrived, he would keep that same energy. Being involved in everything from, a horse stealing ring, to a robbery that involved the death of a police officer. 🔫
After the newspaper wars Moran and the gang would hang out at McGovern’s Library Inn, where O’Banion worked as a waiter. Also most every night the boys would pickpocket patrons personal belongings in the coat room while O’Banion was slipping Mickeys into their drinks. At the end of the night, when the patrons was nice and drunk, they would end up being robbed by the gang.💰
Now, its no secret that the North Side Gang DID NOT like Torrio and Capone because of their dealings in prostitution but they also had a problem with another family of bootleggers, the Genna brothers.
The North Side Gang began robbing the brothers of their liquor shipments and this caused a whole lot of tension.🥃
Do you believe “Bugs” Moran was destined for a career in crime?

Dean O’Banion is originally from central Illinois but moved to Chicago’s Kilgubbin (Goose Island) neighborhood after the death of a close relative. It was there he would began to build his street reputation. O’Banion and a few of his associates (Earl Weiss, Vincent Drucci, and George Moran) would move on and join the Market Street Gang. Some time after that, they would work as “muscle” for newspaper companies during the Chicago news paper wars.
When prohibition started O’Banion began a bootlegging operation with suppliers from Canada. He brought his boys from Kilgubbin in on the operation, and they would quickly become known as the North Side Mob. They ran up north AND the Gold Coast, a upper class neighborhood in Chicago’s downtown area.
O’Banion and his boys pulled off a number of liquor heists. In fact, they are responsible for the first known liquor heist to have occurred in Chicago.
Johnny Torrio, who didn’t want any turf wars, arranged for him and Al Capone to meet with other bootleggers to work out a deal. Torrio explains that there is enough money to go around and no more blood needed to be shed. O’Banion would accept the proposal. Him and his gang, the North Siders, would become part of a huge bootlegging network. At the height of O’Banion’s reign he was bringing in an estimated $1 million a year from bootlegging alone.

Was it a smart move for Torrio to form an alliance with O’Banion and the other bootleggers? Do you thing O’Banion can be trusted?
