Standing roughly 315 feet tall and over 2,400 years old, the Chandelier Tree is a coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) so impossibly vast that in 1937, a tunnel was carved directly through its base — wide enough for a car to pass through. The tree not only survived this audacious act but continued thriving, its fire-scarred reddish bark rising like a skyscraper above the misty forest floor of Drive-Thru Tree Park. That a living thing this ancient endures, unshaken, with traffic passing through its heartwood, is perhaps the most quietly staggering fact in all of botany.
