Parts of the attack were captured in an 18-minute surveillance video. Rudy had crossed paths with Ronald before. A few years before the attack, Rudy was doing community work feeding the homeless and served Ronald a meal — but the attack against him is believed to have been random. Ronald was thought to just be “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Because this story is wrapped in folklore, it makes research a little bit difficult. There are unconfirmed rumors that claim that the last entry in the logbook details an unusually violent storm and described the men crying and praying as they huddled together. The last words written in the logbook were reportedly: “God is above all”. This version of the story also says that despite what the men had recorded in the logbook, there was actually no storm reported in the island’s area that day so it’s unclear what the men were experiencing, if this version of the story is true.
