Today is International Day of the Girl Child.
This year's theme, “End child marriage and invest in girls' rights,” is a reminder that we cannot talk about a girl's future without talking about her right to have one.
Think about a girl who should be worrying about her next examination, discovering her interests, making friends, and dreaming about the woman she wants to become. Now imagine those dreams being interrupted because she is expected to become a wife and take on responsibilities she is not ready for.
Sadly, this is the reality for millions of girls.
In Nigeria, approximately 1 in 3 young women aged 20–24 were married before the age of 18. Behind that statistic are real girls whose education, health, choices, and opportunities may be affected by a decision they were too young to make.
And this is why ending child marriage matters.
A girl should not have to choose between her childhood and her future. She deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, discover herself, and make decisions about her own life when she is ready.
Investing in girls' rights means more than encouraging them to dream. It means keeping them in school, protecting them from harmful practices, listening to their voices, and creating opportunities for them to achieve those dreams.
As we celebrate the girl child today, I hope we remember that girls do not just need encouragement to build their futures, they need the rights, protection, and opportunities to do so.
Every girl deserves a childhood before adulthood, an education before her opportunities are taken away, and a future that is not decided for her before she has had the chance to choose.
Happy International Day of the Girl Child to every young aspiring young girls.
Your dreams are valid 👍
