I am a mom
I am a boy mom
But also...
I am a mom to autism
I am a special needs mom
Usually, I don't just come out and say I have kiddos with asd (autism spectrum disorder). I respect their individual selves apart from their disabilities but it is important part of their makeup. As a momma you never want your children to only be seen for their differences but to be seen for their entire being. For the purpose of this post I will be highlighting their autism for enlightening purposes of the world.
I asked my step-son when he met my boys and he was told they have autism what did he wish he knew. His response was how to interact with them and how they understand so he could communicate appropriately. This is a mountain question to answer on a large scale but individually it's alot more simple. The reason? The SPECTRUM of Autism! The SPECTRUM tries to show how each person with asd are so different depending in their level of function in each area of the brain. In a simple form: just like everyone's personalities are different is exactly how autism is different in each individual. My advice to anyone wanting to be prepared to interact with a person with asd, approach them just like any other, say hello and be yourself! Even if they are non-verbal they will communicate in their own ways. Keep an open mind and heart and make a new friend โจ๏ธ
