One of the highlights of making the La Peña series was getting to talk to former Old Town School teacher Roberto Arce. If you, like us, want to hear more from Roberto, you can watch a performance of him and his group performing the Peruvian song "Las P***s Matan" at La Peña in 1995:

"La música lo aparta uno de muchas cosas malas que hay en la vida." / "Music has the ability to remove you from many of the hardships of life."

Parting words from Roberto Arce at the end of our final podcast, Ep 26 - La Peña, Part 4: Desde La Peña hasta World Music Wednesday: https://soundcloud.com/oldtownschool/ep-26-la-pena-part-4-desde-la-pena-hasta-world-music-wednesday?in=oldtownschool/sets/the-archives-podcast

En la parte final de la serie, La Peña comes to a close, and makes room for a new and broader concert series, which continues to this day: World Music Wednesday. In this episode we hear stories--en inglés y español--from Juan Dies, Mateo Mulcahy, and Roberto Arce, alongside música latina from the archives.

A message from The Archives creator and producer Mareva Lindo: "It's hard to believe, but this is the final episode of the podcast for the foreseeable future. I can't think of a more fitting message to conclude with. I hope that the music and stories in the nearly 7 hours of podcasts we've made over the years offer some small respite from the hardships of life. Thank you for listening."

We've been thinking a lot about John Prine these days. We recently recalled this episode from our 2017 oral history project with StoryCorps in Chicago, in which Eddie Holstein shared a few memories of the school--including the night Steve Goodman took Kris Kristofferson to see his friend John Prine at the Earl of Old Town. Features a live archival recording of John performing "Six O'clock News," as well as many other stories and archival recordings from the Old Town School community in the 1970s.

The Resource Center at the Old Town School: Listen & Learn

Housed in the basement of our 4544 N Lincoln Ave building since 1999, the Resource Center holds a collection of over 25,000 commercial and archival recordings, videos, books, photos, documents and periodicals. Students and the general public are welcome to explore our holdings, and faculty and staff are encouraged to check out books and recordings.

Since 2015 it’s also been the home of The Archives Podcast, hosted and produced by documentarian Mareva Lindo. The podcast highlights the music and stories of the Old Town School via our collection of live performances, digitized field recordings, and more. In honor of the school’s 60th anniversary in 2017 we released an audio documentary on the school, featuring oral history interviews collected with StoryCorps, along with archival recordings and performances by Ella Jenkins, Studs Terkel, and the school's founders. Listen on SoundCloud or Apple Podcasts.

Come visit us Monday-Thursday 3-9:30PM, and Saturdays 12-5PM. Friendly volunteers staff the center and are always on hand to answer questions and search the collection database. There are two listening stations for in-house use and a comfortable reading lounge in the basement lobby. Go to https://www.oldtownschool.org/resourcecenter/ for more information, or email Resource Center director Colby Maddox at cmaddox [at] oldtownschool [dot] org.
