On a calm day near 49th Street Beach, you can still see the rusted boiler of the Silver Spray poking through the waves.

This 109-foot passenger steamer met its end on July 15, 1914, when it slammed into Morgan Shoal, a massive limestone reef that is roughly 400 million years old.

It was actually on its way to pick up 200 University of Chicago students for a field trip—thankfully, the ship hit the ancient rock before they ever stepped foot on board!

The "sinking" was more of a slow-motion disaster that turned into a local spectacle. The crew actually stayed on the stuck ship for days, passing the time by cooking stew while salvage crews tried (and failed) to pull her off the reef.

Eventually, Lake Michigan’s waves hammered the wooden hull to pieces against the prehistoric limestone. As the ship broke apart, chunks of the Silver Spray washed up on the beach, and locals reportedly used the driftwood to host massive bonfires along the shore.

Today, it remains Chicago’s most accessible shipwreck—a haunting piece of history you can literally swim out to.
