Residents Revolt as “Free D.C.” Protests Target National Guard Deployment

Residents of Washington, DC over the weekend demonstrated against US President Donald Trump’s deployment of the National Guard in their city.

As reported by NBC Washington, demonstrators gathered on Saturday at DuPont Circle and then marched to the White House to direct their anger at Trump for sending the National Guard to Washington DC, and for his efforts to take over the Metropolitan Police Department.

In an interview with NBC Washington, one protester said that it was important for the administration to see that residents weren’t intimidated by the presence of military personnel roaming their streets.

The Mexican Economy and the Reduction of Poverty under President Sheinbaum

Economic growth during the six years of Andrés López Obrador’s government (2018–2024), deeply affected by two years of recession caused by the pandemic, was barely 5.5% in total and an annual average of 0.81%. With that scenario, forecasts for the first year of President Claudia Sheinbaum were not good—even the IMF predicted a recession with a contraction of -0.3. But it was not so: the Mexican economy will close 2025 with 0.2% growth.

These weak results, however, cannot be explained without understanding the international context marked by tariff uncertainty, particularly with the United States, which has maintained trade tensions with several partners, including Mexico.

Estos débiles resultados, sin embargo, no se pueden explicar sin entender el contexto internacional determinado por la incertidumbre arancelaria, particularmente con Estados Unidos, que ha mantenido tensiones comerciales con varios socios, incluido México.

¡El Centro de Detención CoreCivic no es querido en la ciudad de California

Over 150 community members turned out—both in person and via Zoom—to protest the opening of a new 2,500-bed ICE detention facility in California City, operated by CoreCivic. The opposition included local residents, faith leaders, immigrant rights groups, and civil rights advocates, with Dolores Huerta speaking in person.

The California City Planning Commission pretended to be transparent by saying that they had no say on whether to approve or not approve the application for CoreCivic to open a detention center in California City. California City is in Kern County, about two hours north of Los Angeles.

For weeks President Trump has been threatening to deploy the National Guard to Chicago and begin massive raids under Operation Midway Blitz.

But the city was prepared. Community leaders have been consistently informing Chicago residents through Know Your Rights Training and Rapid Response networks. Despite Trump’s threats, Chicago held its annual Mexican Independence Day parade in Little Village with the support of the Chicago Teachers Union, local politicians, and community watch groups.

Yet, the celebration carried a somber tone after news broke out that ICE agents killed Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, a father of two who lived in Franklin Park, a suburb outside of Chicago. The city is now calling for an independent investigation. At the same time, community members are also demanding the release of Willian Gimenez, a labor organizer, who is being targeted for speaking up against day labor abuse at the hands of Home Depot and off-duty police officers.

New Data Reveals Deepening Crisis in Post-Roe America

Forcing women to carry unwanted pregnancies to term is a public health issue. In states with abortion bans, lack of access to abortion care can be life-threatening when a pregnancy complication occurs. Anonymous: “After the ban, my doctor was afraid to treat my miscarriage. I was sent home twice from the ER with a fever and told to ‘wait it out’ until it became life-threatening. Their fear of the law put my life at risk.” Amanda Zurawski, Texas, was forced to carry a non-viable pregnancy to term after her water broke at 18 weeks, because doctors said the state’s bans prevented them from intervening until she became septic—a life-threatening infection she subsequently developed.
