Smooth jazz. Dancing. Laughter. Connection. Community. 🎶❤️
That was the heart of the 5th Annual Bronzeville Smooth Jazz Festival on August 1, where I had the joy of returning as emcee and mental health advocate, alongside my co-emcee Shamori Battle.
BSJF brings together so much of what strengthens us—great music, culture, celebration, and the simple power of people connecting with one another.
And this year, resilience joined the program too.
The rain significantly reduced turnout and even forced the second band to stop performing when water began hitting the keyboard. But we adapted, persisted, and kept going.
When the driving rain passed, the music revived; people applauded, danced, laughed, and connected; and the spirit of the festival never left.
That is one reason I value BSJF’s commitment to mental health awareness. Mental health isn’t separate from how we live. Joy matters. Connection matters. Community matters. And so does our ability to adapt when life doesn’t go according to plan.
Resilience isn’t pretending the disruption didn’t happen. It’s adapting without losing sight of what matters.
Like Bronzeville herself, the music and the festival continue to rise—rooted in history, alive in the present, and moving toward what comes next. ❤️🎷
