1851 Franchise

1851 Franchise An entrepreneurial magazine for franchisors, franchisees and anyone interested in the franchising industry. Likewise, 1851 is first in franchising.

1851 was created to fill a much needed hole of content, and to bring the franchise world together through an online educational resource where you will find daily content from thought leaders, journalists, and entrepreneurs. We want to be your guide in business and in life, i.e., in your journey. 1851 was named for the year of franchising’s birth, when Singer Sewing Machines decided to go on a jou

rney called franchising. No singular source currently exists that really talks with you: the franchisee; the franchisor; and the supplier. We are driven to do so.

After a role in corporate brought Jeff Hunter close to the franchise world, the idea of working for himself became too hard to ignore, leading him to invest in a Franklin Plumbing franchise.

“After years of helping others build their businesses, I wanted to channel my skills into my own business,” Hunter said. “Managing two franchise concepts during my time with Henry Investment Group opened my eyes to the value of franchising.”

Equally important, Hunter saw franchising as a way to create a family legacy. His son, who has physical disabilities, could work alongside him, while his wife could contribute through community outreach.

“The chance to work with my family and create something that lasts for them — it’s incredible,” he said.

The shift is happening — and it’s happening fast, especially for broker-conditioned franchises.

I’m getting more and more calls that sound like this:
“We used franchise brokers for growth in the past, but that’s no longer part of our plan moving forward.”

So… how did we get here?

For franchisors, the broker model made perfect sense for years: leverage someone else’s network to sell your brand. It worked — until it didn’t. Now, there are some clear friction points.

You could be paying for the B.S.

Candidates might not be receiving transparency.

The broker vanishes when things go sideways.

 Costs are ballooning.

Franchisors are pivoting back to organic — but there’s a catch:

You’re no longer just competing with brands in your vertical. You’re competing to be seen at all. Brokers are filtering what candidates see — and your brand may not even make the cut.

So how do you break through?
