Today on Community Chatter, comedian Jeremiah Frazier filled in for Marseil and joined me along with Father Larry Dowling and Dr. Elizabeth Lockhart for a conversation about art, faith, healing, and community.

Father Larry shared the story behind Unrequited Love, the painting he commissioned Chicago artist Haman Cross III to create, and how the piece became part of the Faces of Black American Spirit exhibition. The painting is presented alongside 115 photographs from Black Culture in Chicago by Mark Joseph, creating an authentic and affirming portrait of Black Chicago. The exhibition opens October 16 and runs through January 31, 2027, at St. Benedict the African Church, 6559 S. Stewart Ave. in Englewood.

Dr. Lockhart joined us as we shifted the conversation to faith as medicine, cancer survivorship and supporting women throughout their healing journey. We also discussed the Arthur Lockhart Resource Institute’s 6th Annual Sister to Sister Breast Cancer Awareness Walk, Saturday, October 17, from 10 a.m.–1 p.m., beginning at Healing Temple Church, 4941 W. Chicago Ave. The event includes the walk, vendors, art therapy, jewelry making, a fashion show, food and more. For more information, call 773-378-9649.

Today on Community Chatter, we were joined by Debra Vines, founder of The Answer Inc., to discuss Illinois Senate Bill 2524 and how the new law can help create safer interactions between individuals with autism and developmental disabilities and law enforcement.

Wyn-Win Communications partner Andre Garner hosted Community Chatter today with the brother of Jelani Day, D’Andre Day, to share details about the Jelani Day Foundation’s 4th Annual All Black Gala, featuring keynote speaker Ben Crump, on Saturday, August 22, at the Red Door Meeting Place, 1519 Roosevelt Road in Broadview. Cocktail hour begins at 4 p.m., followed by dinner at 5 p.m.

The Jelani Day Foundation was established in 2022 in honor of Jelani’s life and legacy following his 2021 disappearance and death. Created from his family’s fight for answers, the Foundation advocates for greater equity, attention and resources for families of color searching for missing loved ones. Proceeds from the gala help support this continued work.

Today, on the final day of the 31st Annual Black Women’s Expo, we held an important conversation during Mental Health 911: Black Women’s Healthcare Crisis.

Thank you to moderator Dr. LaDonna Raeh and panelists Dr. Willie Mae Jackson, Maya Akai Monet Gavin-Winters, MA, LCPC, Senate Majority Leader Kimberly A. Lightford, and Rev. Dr. Janette C. Wilson-Howard, Esq. for addressing the mental health challenges facing Black women and sharing practical strategies, resources, and pathways toward healing and wellness.

Closing out the Expo with this discussion was a powerful reminder that Black women’s mental health must remain a priority long after the weekend ends.
