With only two weeks until the 2025 BuiltWorlds Infrastructure Conference, we thought we'd give a sneak preview of this year's programming. Our latest article shares five key topics critical to infrastructure that will be addressed across engaging panels, case studies, and small group discussions throughout the two-day event.

One key topic we'll be exploring is strengthening the workforce behind infrastructure growth. Across the board, the industry faces a daunting labor shortage and aging workforce. At the same time, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act has allocated $1.2 trillion in funding to fuel projects nationwide, resulting in further demands on a stretched-thin labor force. In a breakout session titled "Maximizing the Construction Workforce in the Public and Private Sectors", Industry leaders Abel Luna, CSHO (Zachry Construction Corporation), Kelly Hutchinson (New Jersey Department of Transportation), and Allie Perez will explore how organizations of all sizes can leverage technology, inclusion, and upskilling to help close critical labor gaps.

Curious about what other topics we'll be discussing? Read the full article: https://builtworlds.com/news/five-key-themes-at-the-2025-builtworlds-infrastructure-conference/

We want to give a big shout out and thank you to Dai Ohama, general manager of Kajima's Innovation and Incubation Office, who traveled all the way from Japan to spend the day with the BuiltWorlds' team! It was a pleasure to host our long-time partner and friend, who often takes time out of his exceptionally busy schedule to spend time talking strategy and shop with us when he's in the country.

Our relationship with Mr. Ohama and Kajima is a perfect example of how collaboration can lead to great mutual benefit. As he relayed to us today, BuiltWorlds has been instrumental in helping Kajima forge a number of important partnerships all around the world. Catalyzing those connections and fostering collaboration is a big part of what drives us here at BuiltWorlds. We're always incredibly proud when we see those efforts lead to tangible, profitable gains for our clients.

At the same time, Kajima has been incredible partners to us, as well. The upcoming Tokyo Global Summit is a great example of that. Without Kajima's generosity and support, the Summit wouldn't have been able to succeed in the way it has (and in the way we expect it to continue). We can't thank Mr. Ohama and Kajima enough for their partnership and friendship.

If you're interested in joining us and Kajima at next month's Tokyo Global Summit, check out the link below!

The inaugural BuiltWorlds Innovating Building Materials & Supply Chain Conference concluded with our signature Demo Day Competition, bringing innovative entrepreneurs in front of a panel of expert judges and audience of industry leaders. Lightweight waterproof plywood alternative manufacturer Supersede took home the top prize with CEO Sean Petterson impressing the judges with his pitch for the eco-friendly, cost-effective solution.

"Standing up a wood plant right now is expensive," Petterson said in his pitch. "We're setting up facilities that are fitting inside of 50,000 square feet. We could stand them up in a year (and it) costs us $5 million to stand up and the payback period on that is less than a year. So, we can rapidly develop these products (and) we can control the entire supply chain."

Beyond initial costs, Supersede aims to address issues of price volatility and reliability in the lumber supply chain by offering fixed pricing, significant cost savings compared to traditional plywood, and an off-cut buy-back program to minimize wasted materials. The USTA+ Board produced by Supersede promises to be a reliable building material for all applications that require durable sheathing made from 100% recycled material.

With a career in infrastructure spanning two decades, Hamid Rezaei, director/project executive - emerging market at FlatironDragados, is no stranger to public-private partnership (P3) projects, having worked on both the public side and private side of these initiatives across Canada and the United States. We'll be hearing from Hamid at the upcoming BuiltWorlds Infrastructure Conference, happening October 1-2 in Arlington, Va., where he'll be speaking on a panel titled "Next Gen P3s: Rethinking Infrastructure Delivery for Resilience and Long-Term Value."

Sitting down with BuiltWorlds in the lead up to the conference, Rezaei offered his thoughts on common misconceptions about P3 projects, explaining that "people often think that P3s equate to privatization" or that these projects are more expensive to the public. In reality, Rezaei clarified, "P3s maintain public ownership of the asset while leveraging private expertise for delivery and managing" while many instances have shown with whole-life cost analysis that P3 projects are often cheaper with risk "priced and managed more effectively."

For more insights on what makes P3 projects successful, the impact of current policy on the importance of P3 projects, and more, read the full article: https://builtworlds.com/news/exploring-public-private-partnerships-p3-infrastructure-qa-flatirondragados-hamid-rezaei/

As BuiltWorlds CEO Rosemarie Lipman remarked earlier this year, our events are unique because we emphasize engagement, collaboration, and subject matter expertise over size.

Our events aren't expos. They're places where industry leaders and decision makers from all throughout the construction value chain come together to expand their understanding and knowledge base of innovation in the industry, grow their networks in meaningful ways, and find new ways to work together for mutual gain.

At our recent Construction Tech Conference, we asked a few of our guests what they liked about BuiltWorlds' events. This is what they said:

"The wide variety of people from all across the industry who are all so passionate about tech and who are coming here trying to help each other and get better as a group" -Brian Tracy, PE, CCM, Director of Construction Management, Ausonio Incorporated.

"All of the people who come together from different backgrounds. Innovation and events like these are super important so that we can really drive things forward and share those ideas across different types of companies and realy lead the way for the rest of the industry." -Colleen Cahill Poling, Product Manager, Fieldwire by Hilti (Hilti)

"I really enjoyed everything about it. The breakout sessions were really informative and insightful and had great conversations around it. The panel discussions were brilliant, as well—brought a lot of people with different backgrounds to talk about supporting the construction industry." -Ashley Saidi, Senior Manager of Innovation and Construction Technology, EllisDon

But we're curious to hear from you. Let us know what you like (or don't like) about BuiltWorlds' events in the comments below. Or, let us know why you think events like these and a commitment to advancing innovation in construction is or isn't important to you and/or the at-large industry?

As industry leaders wrestle with the enormity of disruption in a $13 trillion sector, they are increasingly exploring opportunities to identify and involve new, collaborative partners. In many cases, the result is a proliferation of “Open Innovation” initiatives. In a conversation in Paris this past June, Groupe Bouygues Innovation Director Vincent Maret, Nemetschek Group Head of Ventures Tanja Kufner, Mota-Engil Transformation & Innovation Director Andrea Fontecilla, and HENSEL PHELPS Director of Innovation Thai Nguyen discussed what it takes to make those initiatives successful.

Watch the full session: https://builtworlds.com/videos/paris-summit-2025-state-open-innovation/

During the discussion, Kufner brought up the challenge of consistent collaboration between partners, innovators, companies, etc. It's not an easy task getting these various stakeholders in the same room, let alone have them engage with one another productively. It's a challenge that is well known to many in the AEC industry, and one that we believe is worth solving.

In the spirit of collaboration, we're heading to Germany this October to put on the first ever Munich AI Conference, with our partners at Nemetschek. It's a big, complicated topic, and most construction companies have a similarly limited understanding of how to implement it effectively (or how it may transform certain parts of the industry in the near- to mid-future). It's a topic that begs for collaboration and community.

We hope you'll join us in Munich and take part in a global effort to improve our industry and businesses for the better.
