In this edition of the Factor This Brief, Content Director Paul Gerke covers, among other things, the Pope's publication of a five-chapter encyclical promoting truth, human dignity, social justice, and AI skepticism. With 20 AI projects canceled in Q1 2026 alone, the reluctance of the highest official in the Roman Catholic Church is in tune with a growing anti-AI movement that poses challenges for industry stakeholders hoping to modernize and harden the electric grid with the help of artificially intelligent systems and infrastructure.

The U.S. Department of Energy is releasing billions of dollars in rebate funding to states earmarked by the Inflation Reduction Act. This flood of cash is going to two home energy programs: Home Efficiency Rebates (HER), and Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR). Respectively, the programs allot funding for whole-home retrofits that cut overall energy use by at least 15%, and point-of-sale coupons for high-efficiency electric appliances for low- and moderate-income households.

In this episode Paul Gerke teams up with Advanced Energy United policy principal Kate Shonk, and the State of New Mexico’s Director of the Department of Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources, Rebecca Puck Stair, who explain:

- Why the funding was stalled in the first place and where the money will go

- How the programs will help to lower energy costs as the cost of living rises
