SHRM’s Decision to Platform Robby Starbuck: Bold Move or Reputational Risk?

SHRM has chosen to include Robby Starbuck—known for his anti-DEI views—on its Blueprint event lineup alongside Van Jones, triggering strong backlash from HR and DEI professionals.

The organization’s statement leaned into values of dialogue and inclusion, arguing that diverse viewpoints bring progress—and that sometimes the fairest way to include is by hearing from all sides.

As communicators, this raises a core question: when does striving for balance cross into legitimizing perspectives that undermine your audience’s trust?

KFC’s latest campaign demonstrates the power of bold, culture-driven communication. After years of slipping from leadership in its category, the brand leaned into its heritage—and its mascot—with swagger. The return of potato wedges ignited social media, opening the door for what KFC calls its “Kentucky Fried Comeback.”

By unifying social, influencer, and earned media under a single narrative, they turned one two-word message—HERE, DAMN.—into 79 million impressions and a clear alignment between creative risk and business impact. It’s a reminder that listening, brand authenticity, and fearless storytelling can reshape perception and drive results.

Going back to their roots and true social listening is boosting the brand.

Why the Best PR Can’t Be Reduced to Numbers

Jacqueline Keidel Martinez (President & CCO at Digital HQ) argues that many of PR’s most crucial returns—like trust, reputation, and loyalty—live outside tidy metrics. When everything must tie to measurable ROI, we risk overlooking what actually moves culture, perception, and long-term value.

If you’ve ever wrestled with “prove it or lose funding,” this is the perspective shift you need.
