For most of those who live in the Chicago area, summer is a season to be treasured. But due to its brevity, and the often bitter harshness of winter in the Midwest, there is a subtle but relentless pressure to enjoy as many of the warm summer days as possible. Beneath the simple pleasures of barbecues, going to the beach, walking through parks, museums, zoos, and forest preserves, an almost manic fever takes hold, propelling those of us who live here to "get outside, go somewhere, do something!"



In the summer, the proximity of Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood to shaded parks, the zoo, Lake Michigan, and numerous sidewalk cafes, draws both residents and visitors to its upscale streets. On a hot Saturday in June, we journeyed from the North Side via the El to join the diverse crowds that congregate here. From promoters of Puerto Rican statehood, the riders of the El, the diners and waiters at an outdoor cafe, to a street corner shadow boxer and a man towing a pig on a bicycle, Lincoln Park has it all.

New and old selections from "Chicagoland: Illusions of the Literal".

"My street work is a black and white photographic dialogue with the people, places, and culture of contemporary Chicago. I attempt to isolate unique slices of time in which an untold story, a puzzling ambiguity, or a hidden significance may be revealed or pondered over.

A street photograph is paradoxically both a fact and a fiction. It purports to be a literal record of a singular moment, yet the reduction to only two dimensions, and the stripping away of the periphery by the act of framing, transmutes the image into something else. It is a fiction, yet also a reality unto itself, possessed of its own rules and potential consequences, imparting its own essence and truth: a black and white world of two-dimensional dreams, understood as much through feeling as through intellect."
