WHAT HAPPENED TO NINA by

I really was excited about this book as this Author is amazing. When I started reading I was deeply engrossed in the plot. A daughter has gone missing after a trip hiking with her longtime boyfriend, who just happened to come home without her. The beginning tells you of what occurs between Nina and Simon and keeps you vested as the final details are still unknown, leaving you guessing.

The story is told in alternating chapters from multiple perspectives of the parents of both Nina and Simon, Detective Matthew, and Nina’s sister Grace. While I found this to be a great method, I did not enjoy all of the filler observations and narratives that seemed to linger on. My intrigue turned to boredom; especially with the stepfather’s part of storytelling.

Albeit this was a slow burning mystery, I do have to say that after pushing through, the book picked up with such a velocity that I couldn’t wait to flip the page. The ending is shocking and something you never saw coming. That made this read all worth it to me.

This is a gripping memoir that provides a fascinating glimpse into the unconventional beliefs of the Lyman Family cult. They held such beliefs as having to be reborn if one did not learn lessons they weren’t able to master in previous lives and the belief that aliens were coming to save them from the end of the world. Turner’s emotional narrative, drawn from childhood diaries, explores her deep connection with the cult and the subsequent upheaval when forced to leave. Guinevere loved those in the cult and she considered them family as she didn’t have a real connection with her birth mother.

The story unveils the cult’s unusual doctrines and captures the poignant moments of Guinevere’s struggle to adapt to a world beyond the cult. Her whole life changes when she goes to live with her mother and her boyfriend who left the cult. She is now in a world where she would go to school and endure heart-wrenching abuse and neglect from an emotionally unavailable mother and her abusive boyfriend. It was so heartbreaking at all that she endured mentally, physically, and sexually.

It was an extraordinary journey for her to overcome these atrocities and ultimately be successful in giving a glimpse into the Lyman family and telling her tale of horrors outside the cult. While the pace may slow in the first half, the second half intensifies, making it a compelling read that becomes difficult to put down.

This is an astonishing novel that truly exceeded my expectations with its exceptional quality and captivating storyline. Hepworth skillfully weaves a suspenseful narrative, drawing readers into the tumultuous lives of the three foster children under the care of an abusive foster mother. The meticulous crafting of characters and the unexpected twists kept me on the edge of my seat.

You get swept into the world of Miss Fairchild and the children she fosters at her home, Wild Meadows. Jessica, Alicia, and Norah endure the abuse of Miss Fairchild leading them to form a resilient sisterly bond that is both heart-wrenching and empowering. Their struggle with their foster mother’s unpredictability is hauntingly realistic, making me emotionally invested in their quest for escape.

Years later, the girls are still as close as sisters, yet haunted by a past they wish to forget. The police have summoned them to return to Wild Meadows following the discovery of human remains buried there. Upon their return, they must confront not only their past traumas but also the unsettling possibility that they could be considered suspects in a potential murder investigation.

This was a gripping mystery thriller that reminded me why I fell in love with reading. Sally Hepworth has truly outdone herself with this masterpiece.

This read delivers a gripping locked-room thriller set on a secluded island, making it a compelling read for fans of the genre. Former college roommates get together at a secluded rental in Maine for their friend Will Mayer’s engagement party, it will be the first time seeing each other in 12 years.

There isn’t much celebrating when they find themselves stranded on the island by with unknown killer who is set on revealing the truth of one death that occurred on their graduation weekend and one as a result of misjudgment.

They are taunted and threatened by an individual who is hell-bent on truth and revenge who is picking them off one by one. The roommates are forced to confront what happened that fateful night and decide if their secrets are worth dying for.

This book is told in alternating chapters from different characters’ perceptions which adds depth to the narrative. The book starts off fresh and feisty but slows down near the end which I feel was a bit drawn out. Despite this, I was very pleased with this thriller as it lived up to my anticipation.

This novel is fulfilling with its woven tale of secrets, revenge, and the consequences of the past.

This was a twisty police procedural thriller that deserves a standing ovation. Although admittedly I initially found it to be challenging, it ultimately became rewarding when the pacing picked up and took off at lightning speed.

The well-orchestrated plot revolves around a survival reality show where contestants unknowingly compete to expose each other's darkest secrets without revealing their own. Seven contestants who were prepared to survive to win $ 100K are now playing a game that may ruin their families, lives, or jobs.

Everything ends up in chaos as one contestant goes missing and someone ends up murdered. Now it is up to Detective Ffion Morgan’s to uncover the truth and catch a killer, adding an intriguing dynamic to the narrative.

Mackintosh’s storytelling prowess shines as she navigates the intricate web of lies and secrets, making this a standout read in the genre.
