BREAKING NEWS: Six Deputies Resigned/Terminated in Clarke County

An open letter was reportedly sent to CCHT citing concerns that deputies had little to no control over certain matters within the department.

Sources say the deputies attempted to submit their resignations but were subsequently terminated by Chief Deputy Billy Lewis.

We are currently awaiting a response from Sheriff Anthony Chancelor regarding the situation.

The following deputies are no longer with the department:
• Sgt. Andy Lafferty
• Sgt. Steve Whitaker
• Sgt. Kenneth Hollifield
• Deputy Peyton Kennedy
• Deputy Ellis Ray Dogget
• Don Moore

This is a developing story. More updates will be provided as information becomes available.

A bill that passed out of committee last week could mean losing your car if you’re caught illegally street racing in certain cities and counties.

On Thursday, the House Judiciary A Committee passed House Bill 1272, a bill that would put additional penalties in place for those caught racing in cities and counties of 25,000 people or more. Under the measure, vehicles would be forfeited to the law enforcement agencies where the violation occurred, and “sold in the matter provided by law.”

The forfeiture would be in addition to other penalties for drag racing, which include fines and jail time, that are already on the books.
