It's not too soon to plan your October trip to Athens, Georgia for the 2024 Festival of the American Liszt Society, devoted to "The Composer-Pianist." From October 13 to 16, 2024, the University of Georgia will welcome a remarkable gathering of performers, scholars, and music-lovers, who will explore a rich variety of music. Marc-André Hamelin will give a recital including the "Hammerklavier" and the premiere of a work commissioned from him by the American Liszt Society, and Gabriela Montero will join the Calidore String Quartet in her new quintet, and the Shostakovich Quintet. We will celebrate Busoni, d'Albert, Sgambati, Medtner, Scriabin, Gulda, Mayerl, Josef Hofmann, Shulamit Ran, George Walker, Zarebski, Ronn Yedidia, Eric Tran, Nathan Cheung, Mel Bonis, and more. The music and the comraderie are not to be missed! Current information is available on the American Liszt Society website: https://www.americanlisztsociety.net/upcoming-festival. We look forward to having you join us!

What a lovely afternoon on which to hand over teaching duties to someone else. It was a pleasure to have American Liszt Society San Francisco chapter president, Jeffrey LaDeur, work with some of Wheaton's student pianists. Freshman Josiah Verbrugge played Liszt's "Sposalizio;" sophomore composition major Sam van Vuuren played the first movement of Liszt's First Piano Concerto; and senior Hope Chun and junior Zak Reynolds jammed together on the first movement of the Mozart Two-Piano Sonata and the finale of Nikolai Kapustin's Sinfonietta. Jeff's musicianship and openness is welcome here any time.

Franz Liszt was born on this day in 1811. As we are not able to gather in celebration this year, let’s all take a moment to think of him today and perhaps listen to or play some of his music in his honor.
