In 1960, the US Army proposed a light observation helicopter program. On February 26, 1965, the US Army announced that the YOH-6A had won the war, renamed it the OH-6A, and nicknamed it the "Indian Stallion". In September 1966, the OH-6A reconnaissance helicopter was delivered to the US Army, and was soon deployed to the Vietnam
In Vietnam, the helicopter formed a "devil team" with the AH-1 Cobra helicopter gunship.
