Along with Ida B. Wells and Frederic Douglass's pamphlet " The Reason Why Colored America is Not Part of the Columbian Exposition", Potawatomi leader Simon Pokagon protested the Fair and American society.

Brilliant poetry at the Inauguration. As the New Yorker says:
Gorman’s poem is, explicitly, a text about the future. She exhorts Americans to look not at “what stands between us / But what stands before us.” She says, at the beginning, that “we know, to put our future first,” and she ends with a verse of promises and challenges as rousing as any ever written:

So let us leave behind a country
better than the one we were left with
Every breath from my bronze-pounded chest,
we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one
We will rise from the gold-limbed hills of the west,
we will rise from the windswept northeast
where our forefathers first realized revolution
We will rise from the lake-rimmed cities of the midwestern states,
we will rise from the sunbaked south
We will rebuild, reconcile and recover
and every known nook of our nation and
every corner called our country,
our people diverse and beautiful will emerge,
battered and beautiful
When day comes we step out of the shade,
aflame and unafraid
The new dawn blooms as we free it
For there is always light,
if only we’re brave enough to see it
If only we’re brave enough to be it

Interiors: Lilly Reich and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Case study: The Tugendhat House

The Mies van der Rohe Society, in partnership with Illinois Tech’s College of Architecture, is pleased to bring you an evening through the lens of acclaimed filmmaker, June Finfer, alumna. You will experience actual footage of the Tugendhat House and hear about it first hand from our presenters, art historian Daniela Tugendhat and her husband, preservationist Ivo Hammer, who are currently working to maintain and share one of the most influential homes of the 20th century.

Join host and moderator, Cynthia Vranas Olsen (M.S. ARCH ‘01, Ph.D. ‘17) and hear about the dynamic collaborative effort between Mies and Lilly Reich to make Tugendhat House, in the words of Daniela Tugendhat and Ivo Hammer, “Mies’s finest residential project.” Commentators include Jong Soung Kimm (ARCH '61, M.S. ‘64); Dirk Lohan, alumnus; Reed Kroloff, dean; and Martin Felsen, Masters of Architecture program director, College of Architecture, IIT.

Celebrate the award winning accomplishments on Lilly Reich’s work with Laura Lizondo-Sevilla and Débora Domingo-Calabuig from the Universitat Politècnica de València.

This evening was made possible through the organizational help of Mies Society members Margaret and David Hensler.
