Yesterday reminded me of timing. I had people in my space who understand art and depth—and it confirmed what I already know: these canvases are still speaking.

Maybe it’s time for another showing…

The Sound Wave Cities series was born from raw canvas and rhythm—abstract strokes inspired by music, movement, and the layered energy of Chicago itself.

If you’ve been waiting to experience them again, stay close. I’m ready to open the doors.

In every season of growth, there comes a moment when the work must move beyond the decks, beyond the venues, and into spaces where vulnerability and possibility live.

This is what Lux Listenings is becoming. Not just a collective of DJs and musicians, but a home for artistry, dialogue, and deeper connection.

Chris joined me in my space to step out of his shell — to share his rhythm, his history, and his truth. It reminded me that the drum, like all sound, is more than music. It’s memory. It’s community. It’s an opening.

I’ve made the decision to bring more artists, thinkers, and creators into my home. To build together. To share process and stories. To document our journeys so we all have content that reflects the depth of who we are.

This isn’t just about gigs or events. It’s about expanding our reach as a collective, and creating opportunities that feed both artistry and community.

We’re here to plant roots and grow something that feels timeless.

As a music director, I’ve booked quite a few djs. While I’ve witnessed many who acquire technology / play hits, as they think it’s all about that, I haven’t encountered nearly as many people who understand what curation means. This is understanding the association with sound, art and creativity OF DJING. I sat down last year and further wrote a syllabus for a program to address the thought process of curating. 🤔

We have an abundance of djs, we don’t have equal amounts of TALENT. It’s the difference in saying bartender and mixologist, picture taker and photographer, cook and chef. It should be blaring by now. More than anything WE need spaces , that understand and exemplify the difference.

Jean-Michel Basquiat
"Back View"
1983

Acrylic and oilstick on canvas
Style: Neo-Expressionism, Graffiti Art
Dimensions: 183 x 122 cm

Basquiat started as a street artist in the late 1970s under the tag SAMO (short for "Same Old Sh*t"), spraying cryptic and poetic messages around New York City. His graffiti wasn’t just random vandalism—it was social and political commentary, often critiquing capitalism, racism, and class struggles. The art world took notice, and soon he transitioned from the streets to gallery exhibitions. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Basquiat never attended an art school. He learned by absorbing everything around him—comic books, anatomy textbooks, hip-hop music, and museum visits with his mother. His raw, unfiltered approach to art is what made his work so unique and powerful. One of Basquiat’s most famous symbols is the three-pointed crown, which appears in many of his paintings. The crown represents Black power, excellence, and the struggle for recognition. Through this symbol, he elevated figures like jazz musicians, athletes, and historical Black leaders, declaring them kings in a world that often overlooked them.
