So let’s take a moment to deinfluence the easily influenced, because it disappoints me to keep watching talented creatives close doors that could change their lives. I was at a dinner this evening where a fashion designer was being honored with an award, and I overheard someone at the table comparing their journey to hers, highlighting her privilege, and criticizing her for what they believed to be her creative shortcomings.

In this case, I happen to know the background of the woman being honored and I know her path was far from easy. Behind that moment of recognition were addiction, the su***de of a parent, foster homes, loss, rebuilding, college dropout and far more than anyone looking at the stage could see. You have no idea what someone survived, sacrificed, lost, built, rebuilt, destroyed, or endured to arrive at the point in their journey where you met them.

What struck me even more was that the person criticizing her didn’t seem to realize they were speaking to someone who had served on the jury and was connected to the foundation behind the award, someone with the ability to make introductions, open doors, and amplify their work.

You never know who is in the room. Talent may get you into rooms, but character and discernment keep you there. Community expands your work. Collaboration scales it. And your character determines whether people advocate for you when you’re not in the room. That’s why envy and comparison are such expensive games to play.

You see the privilege, not the doors that closed and stayed closed. The stage not the discrimination before they got there. The recognition, not the rejection. The access, not the exclusion. The smile, not the tears. The confidence, not the doubt. The opportunities, not the ones that disappeared. The relationships, not the loneliness. The success, not the sacrifice. The outcome, not the cost.

Work on your craft. Stay in community. Be very good to people. Stay true to your path. Clap for people when they are winning, it speeds up your time. Envy can make you so focused on someone else’s open doors that you fail to notice your own. And sometimes, you close doors yourself. - Ambriel

One of the most meaningful parts of building the Fusion Fashion Tech Summit each year has been watching the Fusion Fashion Tech Society community deepen, expand, and become increasingly transdisciplinary. We always have an exceptional lineup of courageous and talented individuals who step forward to share how they are transforming broken systems and helping the next generation of leaders build solutions. This year is no exception, and I am immensely proud to welcome our speakers to the Fusion Fashion Tech Summit: The Reimagination of Good Clothes, What You Take Off Matters.

Each person joining us brings a distinct perspective to a questions that have been central to our work from the beginning: What makes clothing truly good? Good for the body that wears it. Good for the hands that made it. Good for the communities and ecosystems it touches. Good for the future it will meet. Good for our planet.

This year, we are going further by asking not only what we need to create, but what we need to take off: outdated systems, extractive practices, harmful materials, inequitable structures, and assumptions that don’t serve the future we are trying to build.

Our speakers represent the kind of system meets design thinking I believe this moment requires, spanning design, material innovation, technology, research, circularity, economic development, consumer behavior, and regenerative systems. On September 23, we will come together in collaboration with LIM College in NYC, for our third Summit, an official Climate Group, Climate Week NYC event taking place while the United Nations General Assembly is in session. We’re also honored to have Ron Marshall, President of LIM College, deliver this year’s Welcome Convocation.

I’m deeply grateful to every speaker who has chosen to bring their knowledge, experience, and voice into this community. I’m looking forward to the conversations and the impact we will create together.

We’re excited to introduce the first two rounds of speakers and moderators joining us for the third annual Fusion Fashion Tech Summit: The Reimagination of Good Clothes: What You Take Off Matters.

On September 23, the Fusion Fashion Tech Society will bring our community together at LIM College in New York City during Climate Week NYC to explore one central question:

What does it mean to make, wear, and ultimately take off “good clothes” in a rapidly changing world?

This year’s convening is organized around seven interconnected communities spanning ancestral knowledge and storytelling, independent design, next-generation materials, fashion technology, supply chains and economic development, circular and regenerative systems, and consumer education and behavior change.

Our first two rounds of speakers reflect the interdisciplinary community at the heart of FFTS: designers, technologists, scientists, entrepreneurs, educators, researchers, cultural leaders, sustainability practitioners, and system builders working across different parts of the fashion ecosystem.

We’re grateful to every speaker and moderator joining us to share their expertise, challenge conventional thinking, and help us imagine what a more circular, innovative, equitable, and human-centered fashion industry can become.

And we’re not finished yet. Our third and final round of speakers will be announced soon.
