During the week of Thanksgiving, West Humboldt Park’s Turkey Chop Gourmet Grill will serve an extra helping of community love by giving away 250 turkeys Monday, November 23 at noon, then serving free Thanksgiving dinner Thursday, November 26 to 1,000-plus people identified as in need or homeless.

Following Monday’s splurge of turkeys, the no beef, no pork eatery will transform into a soup kitchen from 1 to 3 p.m. to serve its weekly free lunch to the indigent. Quentin Love, 43, started the free meal initiative in March 2014 with help from the West Humboldt Park Development Council and in partnership with the Chicago Food Depository. Since then, Turkey Chop, located at 3506 W. Chicago Ave., has provided free meals to some 52,000 residents. To date, Turkey Chop is the only full-service restaurant (offering dine-in, delivery and catering) the Depository has ever worked with as a soup kitchen once a week.

Metra’s monthly pass will increase by $2.50, the 10-ride ticket by $1.75 and one-way ticket by a quarter.

The hike is being used to pay for a portion of the federally mandated and unfunded Positive Train Control (PTC) safety system, a system that takes over portions of the train if its engineer makes a mistake while steering.

Dorian Lofton regularly rides the Metra train from his home in Matteson, Ill., to his job as a teacher in downtown Chicago.

Kim Foxx, former chief of staff to Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, believes that the criminal justice system in Cook County could use some shaking up. And the former Cabrini Green Housing Complex resident believes that she is the person to unseat current Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez.

The Chicago Citizen Newspaper asked Foxx about the timing of her candidacy, the legitimacy of the Black Lives Matter movement, victim shaming when it comes to sexual assault, her personal story and her role in the Free Spirit Media organization.

Melissa Petty enjoys saving money and conserving energy: She turns off lights when she isn’t using them and doesn’t overuse her home’s furnace or air conditioner.

Last week, Petty’s efforts paid off. ComEd officials announced that she will receive a new energy efficient water heater, valued at $1,200, for curtailing her use of electricity during the summer.

Hampton University is now home to the first HBCU (Historically Black College and Universities) Division I lacrosse program since Morgan State University dropped theirs in 1981. Triplett’s coach, Lloyd Carter, was a member of the Morgan State Bears Lacrosse team. Triplett also said that his coach encourages him to keep the history of Black lacrosse clubs in mind while playing.

“He tells us that we have a legacy to uphold. To build a place for African-Americans in an upcoming sport,” Triplett says. “If you would have told me that four years ago, that I would be the captain of a Division I lacrosse team, I would have laughed at you.”

The upcoming 2016 season will be the first for Hampton University’s lacrosse team as a member of the NCAA Division I tier. The team that initially started out as a club team, will be captained by a native of Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood. Midfielder Jeremy Triplett, a senior and marketing major,…

“The anecdotal evidence certainly suggested that young Black millennials have had different kinds of experiences than young whites,” he added. “But the data has not been there. Our survey findings reflect what has been reported for decades, one story at a time, and the black youth are likely to have different sets of experiences than young whites.”

Incidents of police brutality is something that young blacks not only read about in the newspaper -- they actually live it, suggests a new study. Just more than half of African American millennials polled for the study indicated that they or someone they knew suffered harassment or violence from pol…

Morgan Park H.S. point guard Charlie Moore announced this week his intentions to attend Memphis next year. Here's a feature article we wrote on him back in August.

When Morgan Park High School student Charlie Moore first joined the school’s basketball varsity team, he had to wait patiently for his turn to play. That’s because the team was already stocked with future college players, making playing minutes hard to come by.
