The Irish music community mourns the loss of two great musicians. Earlier this week, while touring New Orleans, Irish American and Chicago South Sider, Marty Sammon from the Marty Sammon Band passed away at the young age of 45, a day after his birthday. With grandparents on both sides hailing from Ireland, Marty embraced his Irish roots learning Irish polkas and reels on the piano but migrated towards his true love of the blues. At an early age, Marty's parents realized his immense talent and Marty began performing for many blues greats. In addition to releasing his own solo album recorded live at the Kingston Mines in Chicago, Marty was the keyboardist for guitar blues legend, Buddy Guy. Marty passed away the morning after performing his last show at the Maple Leaf in New Orleans, a city he loved almost as much as Chicago.

Barry Mohan, guitarist and singer from the group, All Folk'd Up, died tragically in a an auto accident in Ireland earlier this week. Barry was in the prime of his career and left us at a very young age of 28 years.

February 1st may mark the beginning of Spring on the Celtic calendar and a remembrance of Ireland's mother, the Patroness of Erin, St. Brigid, but when you live in the Windy City, February can seem like the longest and bleakest month of the year. As the snow flies, cold weather lingers and "dibs" squabbles continue, there's plenty of singing, dancing and joy in the Windy City Irish studios with lots of new music and celebrations. This week we celebrate a belated Feast of St. Brigid's Day with a new song from Eamon Flynn, we celebrate country music icon Garth Brooks on the eve of his 60th birthday, remember piano great, Libarace, with music from Tara O'Grady and a little diddy from ol' Władziu himself on the anniversary of his passing on February 4, 1987. As live music creeps back into society, we anxiously await upcoming shows from Dervish, Jig Jam, The Merry Ploughboys and Derrick Warfield and the Young Wolfe Tones plus a new songs from John Prine tribute band, Bruised Orange, Austin, TX native, Aaron McDonnell, and from rising star, Dan McCabe. Hey, it's all right here on Windy City Irish Radio. Check us out live on 750AM WNDZ or live streamed on www.globalirishradio.com or on our podcast at www.windycityirishradio.com.
