What does it say about someone whose favorite video game and favorite movie are both tragedies where every single hero dies in the end?
Honestly, I don’t even know how to answer that question. But in my opinion, Rogue One and Halo Reach are an absolute masterclasse in storytelling.
What makes them so great is that if you’re a fan of either universe, you actually know how the story has to end before you even press start or buy a movie ticket. Yet, both do such an amazing job of building hope and pulling you into a false sense of security, making you think that somehow, against all odds, everyone will be okay.
And then, one by one, they meticulously break your heart by taking down your entire crew.
Halo Reach came out first back in 2010, and to this day I still don’t understand how some people hated its story or gameplay. Part of me genuinely wonders if the writers of Rogue One took some inspiration from how Reach handled Noble Team.
Maybe I ‘m just finding an interesting connection between two of my favorite franchises, but the thematic similarities are there.
How y’all think Halo Reach and Rogue One compare as tragic prequel stories?
