We’re proud to partner with Openlands Forest Preserve District of Cook County Friends of the Forest Preserves and a coalition of community organizations to introduce a new bilingual (English/Spanish) curriculum and audio tour for the African American Heritage Water Trail.

Join us on Saturday, March 28 (10:00am–2:00pm) at the Ford Calumet Environmental Center at Big Marsh Park for an interactive workshop exploring how African American history, local ecology, environmental justice, and youth leadership come together through place-based learning in Chicago.

This newly developed curriculum is designed to support educators, interns, youth leaders, and community members with practical, accessible tools for teaching the rich cultural and environmental history connected to the Trail.

Today we celebrated World Read Aloud Day by sharing We Celebrate Juneteenth Unidos with a Kindergarten class.

Read-alouds create powerful moments for young learners to listen, wonder, ask questions, and make meaning together. When children hear stories that reflect diverse histories and experiences, they begin to see reading as something that connects them to the world and to one another.

We’re grateful for classrooms that center joy, curiosity, and inclusive storytelling.

Ya Nos Vamos a Dormir / Now We Go to Sleep was co-created by Valerie Butrón and Paola Celeste López with deep care for rhythm, rhyme, and meaning in both languages. It was written to offer families a calm, reflective way to end the day and create a bedtime ritual rooted in connection and presence.

Grateful to see this story finding its place in quiet evenings and bedtime routines.

One of our favorite bedtime rituals at Tumbao is simple and powerful: gratitude. Before sleep, Paola and her daughter take turns sharing one thing they’re grateful for from the day.
