Publishers' Inventions: For the past six years or so of book fairs we've been big fans of standing on those interlocking square gym mats. Concrete floors will f**k you up. In Seattle last weekend, Marc and Rachel Hays from were talking about this and Rachel mentioned kneeling pads. While picking up some other fair supplies today at a dollar store, Marc noticed these pads and picked up one for each foot. They are just as light as the gym mats and a good easy size to pack. Plus, maybe you can rubber band them to your shoes? While good supportive shoes are still a must, for a dollar each, these are going to save a lot of agony (I almost never sit down at fairs; speaking from a seated position creates more vocal strain. No judgement if you are not able to stand all day, or able to stand at all. - Marc).

Thank you for lightening the luggage, Seattle! After two amazing days, this is all that is coming home.
