LOS ANGELES Friday June 26th, the very day that SML โ€™s new live album โ€˜Spontaneous Music Liveโ€™ is released, the band kicks off a two-night residency at The Teragram Ballroom for Aquarium Drunkard โ€™s 21st Anniversary Celebration, performing *in the round*.

The forty-eight minute live album comprises two side-length pieces of unedited improvisation, recorded live at Los Angeles venue Zebulon during the bandโ€™s December 2025 residency, just weeks after the release of their critically-acclaimed second album How You Been.

Spontaneous Music Live was recorded and mixed live in stereo to analog tape by ๐—•๐—ฟ๐˜†๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—š๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜‡๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€ (the engineer who is known for his transportive documents of Jeff Parkerโ€™s ETA IVtet, including the recently-released Happy Today).

โ€œWaitingโ€ opens with solo trombone laid deeply in a dense web of cloudy effects, holding a warped mirror to Vandeverโ€™s melodic brass call. The two elements vie for position until the halfway mark, when the disorienting tonal wash wins out, soon joined by Vandeverโ€™s longing and contemplative high-register vocal work โ€” not dissimilar to the alluring intimacy of Grouper or the obscure swoon of Victorialand era Cocteau Twins. Itโ€™s a beautiful piece of music and excellent means of drifting deeper into the world of Vandeverโ€™s forthcoming album Mana โ€“ a stark electroacoustic meditation on yearning, loss, bewilderment, and their Hawaiian ancestry.
