:earth_africa: One Year Before Everything Changed...
Take a close look at this map.
This is Europe in 1913—just one year before World War I exploded across the continent.
From the outside, Europe looked stronger than ever. Cities were booming, industries were expanding, and powerful empires controlled huge territories. But behind the prosperity was a dangerous reality: distrust, nationalism, military buildups, and secret alliances.
Germany was rising fast and challenging the old powers. Austria-Hungary was struggling to keep its many ethnic groups united. Russia was expanding its influence in Eastern Europe. Britain and France were increasingly worried about Germany's growing strength.
Then there were the Balkans—the most unstable region in Europe. Nationalist movements, territorial disputes, and recent wars had turned the area into a powder keg waiting for a spark.
That spark arrived in 1914 with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
Within weeks, alliances activated, armies mobilized, and a regional crisis became a global war.
What's truly remarkable is what happened afterward. By 1919, the German, Austro-Hungarian, Russian, and Ottoman Empires had all collapsed. Entire countries disappeared. New nations emerged. The world order was rewritten.
