Meet Red Herring, a racing ketch from 1980 built by Eric Goetz, designed by David Hubbard with a 35° canting keel, carbon masts and a displacement of just 4300kgs(9,500 lbs). At a LOA of 16,8m(55ft) and a beam of just 2,5m(8ft) she was an extraordinary sight. After finishing 2nd in her division in the 2025 Bayview-Mackinac Race, she was lost on Lake Michigan following a rudder failure in heavy weather. The rudder snapped off and the boat started taking on water quickly. Thankfully all crew were rescued successfully. Red Herring has become a wild piece of racing yacht history as Lake Michigan claimed one of the most unique yachts to sail her waters.

The story doesn’t end there as Red Herring’s owners are building a Red Herring II…
