We’re a little late posting this, but we couldn’t miss an opportunity to brag on our wonderful museum!

On Friday, June 27, Childress County Heritage Museum hosted Texas Tech University’s Southwest Collection and Special Collections Library Assistant Archivists Weston Marshall and Elissa Stroman for a special luncheon.

Marshall, Southwest Collection Assistant Archivist, gave an overview of the library’s vast archive of historical materials, including manuscripts, photographs and rare documents, while Stroman, Oral History Assistant Archivist, highlighted the importance of oral history and how powerful, personal stories are collected, preserved and used to enrich understanding of the past.

Thanks for having us, Childress County Heritage Museum!

Support TJ Salinas' journey to the 2025 Native American All-Star Showcase! ⚾️

Wellington Skyrocket TJ Salinas has been selected to participate in the 2025 Native American All-Star Showcase, presented by the Native American Athletic Foundation in partnership with the Atlanta Braves, Thursday, June 19-Sunday, June 22 at Truist Park in Atlanta, Ga.

Dedicated to helping young Native athletes move to the next level and become leaders of character, at the showcase, Salinas will work with former Major League Baseball players and coaches to sharpen his baseball skills and learn valuable leadership lessons through community leaders and workshops, all while having an opportunity to meet real recruiters.

"Baseball has always been a part of my life since I was little and getting the chance to play in the Native American All-Star Showcase is an incredible honor," TJ said. "I'm proud to represent my tribe and town and play the game I love, and I hope to make it to play at the next level."

TJ, a member of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska, is already one of the Indian Country's top 50 high school baseball players, as well as a recent District 2-3A Most Valuable Player selection, Skyrocket Baseball Most Valuable Player and Amarillo Globe-News King of the Diamond selection.

To aid TJ in his journey, raffle tickets for an Oklahoma Joe's Smoker can be purchased at Bawcom's Supply in Wellington or by contacting TJ's mother, Shauna Salinas, at 806-205-1688. Tickets are $10 each, $50 for six or $100 for 15. A drawing will be held Sunday, June 15.

Good luck at the Native American All-Star Showcase, TJ! 🚀

⛈️ SEVERE WEATHER ALERT ⛈️

A majority of the Texas Panhandle, including Childress, Collingsworth and Hall counties, are under a Hazardous Weather Outlook, Flood Watch and Severe Thunderstorm Watch, according to the National Weather Service.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook is in effect for the South Plains, Rolling Plains and far Southern Texas Panhandle.

Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop late this afternoon through evening. The greatest chances are over the far southern Texas Panhandle and the Rolling Plains, although thunderstorm development over the South Plains could be possible. Strong wind
gusts up to 90 mph, very large hail up to softball size, localized flooding and tornadoes can be expected with any severe thunderstorms that develop.

Daily chances for thunderstorms continue this week. Light winds aloft will be favorable for locally heavy rain and flooding at times, especially Tuesday and Wednesday. Some severe thunderstorms will also be possible.

A Flood Watch is in effect from 6 p.m. through late tonight.

Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible in portions of northwest and the Panhandle of Texas. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Residents should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 11 p.m.

Due to the above weather watches, the east and west Childress County Courthouse doors will be open for shelter, according to Childress County Judge Kimberly Jones.

Childress Elks Lodge #1113 hosted an amazing Memorial Day Service this morning at Jones Chapel in Childress Cemetery.

Today, we take the time to honor those who died in service to our country and think of the families of the fallen and those who served with them on this solemn day.

Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. Freedom is never free, and we are forever grateful.

"Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it." 🇺🇸
