According to Childress Police Department Chief Jerrald Johnson, a male suspect shot off a gun at Fair Park City Auditorium around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 17.

There was an event taking place at the auditorium, and two officers were working the event, Johnson said.

According to a release by the Childress Police Department, the suspect was located quickly by an officer, and he was taken into custody.

"The suspect was intoxicated and was just shooting the gun in the air," Johnson said. "At no time did he threaten anyone with the weapon. He was just reckless with his actions."

The gun was recovered, and no injuries were reported.

With school starting next week, Childress Police Chief Jerrald Johnson has provided tips on how to keep students safe this back-to-school season.

👀 Watch the crosswalks for students. Pedestrians have the right of way.

📱 When in a School Zone, do not use cell phones and watch your speed.

🚗 Follow school buses at a safe distance, keeping in made that they make frequent stops.

🚦 Watch for children around school buses and remember that they may not always look for vehicles before crossing the street.

✋ Always stop for flashing red lights or a stop sign on a school bus regardless of which direction you're headed, unless the bus is on the opposite roadway of a divided highway. You may continue once the bus has moved, the flashing lights have stoped or the bus driver signals it is okay to pass.

"We can all help to protect our future leaders," Johnson said.
