Body Recovered From Chippewa River, Following Disturbance in Eau Claire
On Saturday, July 18, 2026, around 2:30 a.m., officers were called to a disturbance in the 400 block of Galloway Street in Eau Claire. The initial report was that people were actively fighting on the sidewalk.
A male fled the scene and was later located by officers standing in the Chippewa River just below the Haymarket Landing stair access. Officers called out to the male to try to get him to come back to shore. He refused and went deeper into the river. Eau Claire Fire and Rescue was requested to respond with a rescue boat to help bring him to shore.
Many resources were utilized to maintain visual and verbal contact with the male. He began to struggle as he attempted to cross the river. Officers advised he went under the water. Northstar Search and Rescue was called to the scene with additional boat and drone capabilities to search for him.
The Eau Claire Police Department can confirm the maleβs body was located and recovered. Tragically, he did not survive.
