Of all life’s ponderables, I ponder—this mystery has finally been solved!
Why Great Blue Herons never made it onto the KFC menu…
Now I know.

Despite the horrible light, heavy clouds, and snow in the air, I was looking for eagles, when this Great Blue Heron decided he wanted his portrait taken too.
He flew in and landed about 10 feet in front of me like, “I’m ready when you are.”

In a flash, this guy went from peacefully perched—resting and soaking in the beauteous scenery of Onondaga Lake—to full predator mode. One second calm… the next, all business. I definitely wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of that December 18 2025

Onondaga Lake · 12-13-2025
Swiftly scanning below during flight, this eagle hunts like a surgeon looking for one nerve ending in the brain — instantly finding the weak spot, for its nest, and SNAP!
Me? I would’ve picked something on the ground… preferably not moving.
Thankfully, he’s far more skilled, far more patient, and doesn’t mind working at altitude.

Rebuilding season at Onondaga Lake. This eagle carried in a branch larger than his 6–6½-foot wingspan. Willing to help in every way — except one. Bidet? Absolutely not.

Buster remains stoic as Babs tries to teach him the Hokey Pokey.
Buster wants nothing to do with it!
Can you blame him? He was a wedding photographer for many years…
Pretty soon she’ll be doing the Macarena.

Do you think it’s been cold out yet?
If you’re heading to Onondaga Lake, plan ahead and dress in layers!!! because the weather at the end of the Creek walk can be an entirely different world than where you started. Trust me!

I love it when the morning sunlight splashes through heavy clouds and gives me something special to expose for a few seconds.
I love it even more when I don’t blow those highlights out!
End result… see above.

He slipped into the evergreen branches as if the trees were opening a path just for him. Watching him weave through the greens at Onondaga Lake this early November inspired me to create a 12x26 piece to capture that moment of pure, quiet grace.
