Buster was perched up over Murphy’s Island this morning (9-1-25). His stare could cut steel—nothing sneaks past that gaze. Then the sun hit him just right… lit him up like a beacon across Onondaga Lake. Hard to miss the king when he decides to shine.

Buster on August 5th, 2025 — panting in the August heat. That look in his eye says it all… and check out that tongue, sharpened over almost 5 years of Babs yelling at him. Poor guy’s not sure what’s hotter — the August sun or the marriage vows!

Look who’s cruising the lake this morning! Pretty sure this is one of our young eaglets. He even paused just long enough to let me grab a few shots—made my day to see him again! 08--28-2025

“Just gliding along this morning (Aug. 27, 2025) in that warm morning glow—she barely tilted her wings and took off without much effort at all. That’s the kind of morning commute I’d sign up for! Still… she’s looking a little concerned. Most likely scanning for that rascal Buster—where has he wandered off to now?”

From Onondaga Lake — Ole Buster thought he’d discovered a gem in the Guinness World Eagle Record Book… supposedly, the innards of a gizzard shad could wrap around a tree trunk ten times. You can just picture his face when he gave it a try and realized he’d been duped. Poor Buster—always chasing records, never quite breaking them!

**From Onondaga Lake – July 29th, 2025**
The “kids” gave us one last round of playful flights before saying their goodbyes. Swooping, chasing, and showing off those growing wings, it felt like they were putting on a farewell performance. Another season in the books—and what a joy it’s been watching them grow.

I've been asked on multiple occasions to explain the differences in the male vs female eagles!
⚠️ Disclaimer: These findings are based on 100% pure, unfiltered Ed-ology. Take with a grain of salt… or a squirrel.
Battle of the Eagles: Buster vs. Babs Edition
1️⃣ Beak Size – Females get the jumbo model. Males stick with the compact version.
2️⃣ Mouth-to-Eye Ratio – Her mouth stretches way back for that “don’t test me” look. His stops halfway, which makes him look like he’s grinning ear to ear.
3️⃣ Size Overall – She’s about 25% larger… and makes sure he knows it.
4️⃣ Coloring – He’s darker, she’s lighter. (Think “tan vs. winter pale.”)
5️⃣ Disposition – She looks like she’d eat him for dinner. He’s happy-go-lucky, just trying to keep her smiling… and alive another day.
6️⃣ The Eyes Have It – The male rocks “guy liner,” a bold dark ring around his eyes. The female? Her brow furrows downward, giving her that perpetual “don’t mess with me” glare.

From Onondaga Lake, 08-20-2025, this morning’s heavy rain didn’t keep Babs away! She perched facing west—right where the Great New York State Fair is kicking off today. Judging by her look, I think she’s less than thrilled about the ruckus of ferris wheels, sky rides, and music echoing across the lake. Looks like her late summer roosting spot might be a little too close to the action. Poor Buster… he’s probably in for another round of grumbling!

Buster and Babs gave me quite a show at Onondaga Lake during the early eaglet-rearing season. Teaming up in the tall pines, one of them circled from above while the other waited below, trying to flush out a squirrel. The squirrel was clever, darting back upward into the thickest part of the tree. But these two weren’t about to give up—they stomped and pressed until the little guy tumbled out. In a twist of luck, the squirrel managed to slip away under their watchful eyes, leaving Buster and Babs to regroup for their next hunt.

From Onondaga Lake – July 8, 2025
Fresh off a successful fishing trip, this eagle paused long enough for a regal portrait before delivering dinner to the impatient, squawking brood. I thought this guy deserved the full treatment — a true master of both the hunt and the pose.

“And here he comes, folks—WrongWay Peachfuzz, the only eagle who can turn a simple landing into a three-act comedy! Off the tree trunks, into the treetops, and… down he goes! But wait—he’s back up and claiming it was all part of the routine! From Onondaga Lake, 7-27-2025, another awkward yet technically successful touchdown!” One of my last images of this guy!
