Say hello to my Ellora electric massage table, built in early 2004!

Folks, the investment is worth it!

I've only replaced the foot pedal once. Sometimes it needs a little extra maintenance and has to be tipped on its side to be oiled.

I used B'laster -it's meant for heavy duty. (WD 40 didn't help. And apparently, you're not supposed to use massage oil. 😆)

This is easier as a 2 person job, but I gotterdun.

Someone needs to hear this today:

YOU CAN DO HARD THINGS.

➡️Quit the job that leaves you in tears each day when you leave
➡️ Start a new business, scared

What a massage therapist thinks of when you say
"Post that thirst trap".

Thought you were gonna see something else?

Shame on you. 🙈🙉🙊

Yes, we need to take care of ourselves. If we don't do it now, we'll pay for it later.

Massage therapy can be a treasure trove for those in pain, those struggling with anxiety or PTSD.

For those who want someone to take care of THEM for just a little while.

For those who simply need to be touched in a kind and caring manner.

But MASSAGE IS A LUXURY for many people. When you struggle to pay your bills or buy equipment for your kid's sports. When you're exhausted from working an extra job, delivering food in your unreliable car to earn extra money or selling plasma to buy enough time to keep your bank account afloat.

Massage therapists-instead of trying to convince the public that massage is NOT a luxury, how about we simply market to those who can afford to spend money on themselves?

Or donate a massage here or there as a way of tithing?

My husband and I have 8 kids. There have been times when I could easily afford to pay for regular massages and other times when the bills caused panic attack type of anxiety.

If you've never been there, count yourself blessed. Or lucky, however you want to put it.

But let's not bully people into thinking our massage is NOT a luxury. Because for many people, it is.

End of rant.

As massage therapists, we talk a lot about hydration—but are we walking the walk, especially during summer?

When it’s hot out, we lose more water through sweat—even when we’re not working out.

Combine that with a packed day of bodywork, and you could be running low without realizing it.

Dehydration can lead to fatigue, brain fog (did you work both legs or zone out? 🤣) and even muscle cramps. Not ideal for a physically demanding profession like ours!

Staying hydrated helps keep *lyour joints and muscles happy—and also makes a difference for your clients.

When they’re hydrated, their tissues respond better, and they’ll likely feel more refreshed after a session.

A few easy tips:
✔️ Start your day with a glass of water
✔️ Sip between clients
✔️ Add sea salt + lemon for a natural electrolyte boost
✔️ Remind clients to hydrate before and after their session (unless you're not allowed to "prescribe" water. Then tell them that YOU feel better when hydrated.)

Staying on top of hydration is a simple way to feel better, work better, and help your clients get more out of their sessions—all summer long. 💦

1. Perhaps you've heard that I have 8 kids. (Yes, I've given birth to them all!)

2. What you probably DON'T know is that we have a set of identical twins who have different birthdays. 🎂 🎂

3. I love platform shoes. Ironic, since I work barefoot. These Converse all my current casual faves. My first pair of platforms were in 7th grade (you weren't born yet) and had a wooden sole with a hole in the middle of the heel. I twisted my ankle day one. Yet the bug began there. 😁 They were GROOVY.

4. I have almost a photographic memory. Bit only for useless facts, like where I bought every piece of clothing I own.

For instance:
💰Pony tail foldable hair thingy: Pony-O
💰Cool leather earrings:
💰Glasses: Costco
💰shirt and shorts-St Vincent de Paul
💰Converse-Clothes Mentor
💰Unmentionables: Target and Amazon.

5. If you could have a PhD in random knowledge, I'd have it. Completed Coursework would involve: Theatre and Film, Business administration (my college degrees), massage therapy, photography, nutritional therapy and copywriting.

6. I refuse to age poorly, if I have anything to do with it.

I DID learn that massage releases toxins. They taught us that back in the day.

🚨PS I can't credit the original artist because I had the cartoon saved ages ago. Let me know if you know who it is!

What's the truth?

Here's what the research says:

There is 🙅🏻no scientific evidence that massage releases or flushes out toxins from the body. The concept is a common myth not supported by clinical studies.

Massage DOES have well-documented benefits: improved circulation, reduced stress, support for the lymphatic system, and relief from muscle tension.

Some studies show short-term shifts in inflammatory markers and stress hormones, but these are part of normal physiological responses—not evidence of detoxification.

Detoxification is handled efficiently by your

✅liver,
✅kidneys, and
✅lymphatic system

—massage doesn't replace or significantly enhance those processes.

It’s time to move past the myth and appreciate what massage actually does: support overall wellbeing in ways that are backed by evidence.

2 years ago, we wallpapered my massage room. That wall had been a solid blue for over 15 years.

15 YEARS.

Fewer than 40 % of my regular clients noticed.

We spend much time obsessing over the perfect room decor. How much does it matter, really?

I will admit that a beautiful massage room brings a bit of extra serenity and even pampering.

I would suspect that the largest majority of your clients would come back to you even if your room wasn't up to Insta pic standards.

They want your compassion, skills, and comforting yet effective touch.

So if your room isn't where you want it to be, it's ok. That may eventually come.

You still are a great massage therapist.

Massage therapists with long lasting careers?

Hey! I’m Mary-Claire Fredette, licensed massage therapist in Ohio since January 15, 1999, a momentous day in my life for sure! Early on in my career, I discovered that high-volume hands-on massage is the best way to destroy your body and your career. When I discovered barefoot massage in 2002, I knew that I could empower other massage therapists to save their bodies and to provide comfortable, effective deep tissue massage for years. My teaching career began in 2004.

In 2017, I co-founded the Center for Barefoot Massage, where our team of hand-picked instructors share their skills and love of barefoot massage with massage therapists throughout the US. After having taught for a few years, I discovered that many massage therapists are not taught viable, essential business skills in school. While the business world has changed substantially since the late 90’s (when I was in school), I’ve learned a lot along the way.

And that’s why I’ve decided to expand my love of teaching to the online world, to empower massage therapists to soar in long-lasting careers.
