When I started my business, I was so pumped that I got to build something on my own.
Like most young business owners, I was a rugged individualist. That’s what draws us to starting our own business - we sort of idealize the lone cowboy forging a new path in the wilderness.
And that was awesome and invigorating and inspiring.
Until it wasn’t.
Because the truth is, it’s tough being a lonesome cowboy. It is - by definition - lonesome.
Your thoughts become extremely loud in that lonely echo chamber. It works to your advantage on the positive thoughts, but really serves as a disadvantage on the thoughts you struggle with.
Thoughts like I’m not good enough, nobody wants my offer, I can’t make enough money to replace my income, I’m scared that I’ll fail.
Over time, I realized that I needed support. That I couldn’t do it all on my own.
I needed two things: a community and an advocate.
I’ve developed some great friends on this platform who have served as my community. People who are on the same path, forging their way through the wilderness. And we bond over doing that together on separate but nearby paths.
And I hired an advocate - an advisor whose goal is only for me to be as successful and happy as possible. My advocate teaches and guides and supports and walks alongside me in this journey.
Maybe you’ve started your own business, gotten a few months in, and realized that this road is lonely. Maybe you’re starting to think you need some advocates and community.
But maybe you’re scared to ask for help (I know I was). It’s okay to be scared. But the first step out of that lonely road and into a more fulfilling one is asking for the help you need.
If you’re looking for community, comment below. Let’s get folks connected.
If you’re looking for an advocate or want that community but don’t want to blast it out in public, DM me “PARACLETE” (then go look up the word).
