The dead, they say, tell no tales. Cincinnati’s gravediggers were another matter. Every couple of years, one of the local newspapers would send a reporter out to interview the boneyard excavators. Here is a selection of their yarns. https://ow.ly/gg0N50Xf7sZ

Cincinnati was ranked by USA Today as the No. 1 U.S. city for street art in 2024 and No. 2 this year, so a lot of local artists are making their marks on the city. But Jason Al Ghussein is creating very different murals from other artists.

The Cincinnati-based Palestinian-American artist did a vibrant 50-foot-tall mural of Palestinian Jaffa oranges in 2020, “Welcome to Jaffa,” that he painted illegally on an abandoned building in Over-the-Rhine. It drew the attention of Pink Floyd cofounder Roger Waters, who visited the painting in 2022 to meet with Al Ghussein before a concert stop at Heritage Bank Center. Later that evening, Waters wore the keffiyeh that Al Ghussein gave him—a symbol of Palestinian resistance—on stage.

Al Ghussein is set to unveil his latest work, “Focus on Love,” a striking 50-by-75-foot mural featuring a young Palestinian girl in Gaza donning bright red heart-shaped sunglasses and a bold black-and-white patterned Palestinian keffiyeh. He’ll officially unveil the completed mural to the public on Tuesday during a dedication ceremony and multi-benefit fundraiser at 1622 Main St. in Over-the-Rhine. https://ow.ly/wCcX50Xf49q

This home, built for Alfred Traber Goshorn, has ties to Queen Victoria and the World’s Fair.

Built in 1891, the Richardsonian Romanesque mansion was designed by acclaimed architect James W. McLaughlin. Its ashlar stone exterior is striking, with a burst of color appearing in the gambrel roof’s red tile. There is grandeur in the small details, like the turreted oriel or the intricately carved limestone archway leading into the main entrance, with its elaborate curls and elegant flowers. The masonry detail is exquisite, a testament to the high level of craftsmanship from this gilded age. https://ow.ly/gcU850XeTmR

Missing the camaraderie from his former life as a brewery owner, Dow Scoggins started hosting a craft beer competition back in 2009 while living in Georgia. Five years later, he moved to Oxford when his wife took a job at Miami University—and he brought the event with him. Now, Scoggins hosts four contests a year, including this month’s U.S. Open Cider Championship. Billed as the “second-largest cider judging in the world,” it draws brew entries from all over the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Each contestant can enter up to 10 hard ciders in 22 categories—everything from Brut to pineapple cider. This year’s winners will be announced in late November. While the event isn’t open to the public, you may see some of the winners on menus around the state, like Nice Pear from Akron’s Missing Falls Brewery, which won second place in the “best of show” category last year. https://ow.ly/hPqC50XcvOE

When Yemi Oyediran began working on a concert series inspired by King Records, he knew there was a bigger story waiting to be told. The result is "King of Them All," a new documentary exploring the legacy of the legendary record label, which premiered on PBS on October 10.

The son of Nigerian immigrants, the filmmaker moved from Cleveland to attend the University of Cincinnati. Despite having offers from other universities, he knew that at UC he would have the opportunity to study engineering while not sacrificing his passion for music. https://ow.ly/CX7N50Xcvv1

The Cincinnati Museum Center and the Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center will open their doors on October 18 for the arrival of new exhibition "Auschwitz. Not Long Ago. Not Far Away.," offering a glimpse into the realities of the N**i extermination camp.

The exhibition—one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of artifacts from the Holocaust outside of Europe—documents the rise of N**i ideology and the transformation of German-occupied Polish town Oświęcim into one of the most significant N**i concentration and extermination camps of the Holocaust. Around one million Jewish people and over a hundred thousand other prisoners were murdered at Auschwitz during its operations in World War II.

The traveling exhibition has toured in other major cities including New York City, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Toronto, and now at the Queen City’s Union Terminal. Tickets have been in high demand since they went on sale in May, and spots remain limited each day. https://ow.ly/37UG50XcqlL
