Soapbox Cincinnati features Dr. Jessica A. Rickert, who made history in 1975 when she graduated from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry@ and became the first American Indian female dentist in the U.S.
A Grand Rapids native who built a longtime practice in Southeast Michigan and now lives in Traverse City, Dr. Rickert continues to lead efforts to close the oral health gap for Native communities. As Delta Dental of Michigan Anishinaabe Dental Outreach Specialist, she travels to all 12 Michigan reservations and Urban Indian Centers, raising awareness about preventive dental care.
With only about 400 American Indian dentists practicing nationwide — far short of the 3,000 needed for parity — Rickert believes change starts with visibility and education. That’s why her story is now featured in the newly enhanced Mitten Kids Dental Exhibit at the Grand Rapids Children's Museum, open through May 31.
