Cozumel is one of my favorite ports in the world, but only if you actually know what you're doing. Most people step off the ship without knowing the basics.
Here's what matters:
Your pier changes everything. Cozumel has three terminals: Puerta Maya (Carnival Corporation ships), the International Terminal (Princess, Norwegian), and Punta Langosta (Disney, Celebrity, MSC). Punta Langosta is the only one in downtown San Miguel, so you can walk off the ship and actually be somewhere. At the other two, you need a taxi to get anywhere worth going.
Taxis are private, government-regulated, and fares are posted by zone at each pier. No Uber in Cozumel. Bring cash and small bills. Most drivers do not take credit cards.
The free beach here is not what most people picture. Public beach options near the terminals are rocky with no amenities. Most cruisers end up at a beach club, which is a flat day-pass with all-inclusive food, drinks, and beach or pool access. There are several options and they are not all the same. Research before you go. Vibe, price, and what is included varies significantly between them.
One more thing: do not rent a scooter. They look fun. Local drivers call it the number one tourist mistake on this island.
