Both my residence and office overlook Piatt Park, and I walk past or through it many times each week. A year or two ago, there were some summer problems with young people doing drugs and ODing in the park. We would call the police to revive and remove them. But with increased patrols, those problems no longer exist. And as historic preservationist Beth Sullebarger pointed out, the park design (which is beautiful and appropriate to the historic site) is not to blame.
I have been surveying the neighbors (which 3CDC failed to do), and all seem to agree that we prefer the park remain as it is. Some of the proposed changes appear to detract rather than add to the design. It would be a mistake to try a makeover in the manner of Washington Park or Court Street Plaza. One size does not fit all.
We are grateful to LPK (which moved from the Doctor's Building) for the generous support it supplied over the years. We can identify others to follow its example.
There is a basic human need for small, intimate gathering places, and Piatt Park is best left as it is. My company can contribute funds for the annuals bedding plants, as LPK always did. Their jazz at noon weekly concert was a joy, and I can surely find a sponsor to underwrite that program.
