I've followed Benn Jordan on the YouTubes for a while now. His videos are in-depth and interesting. Only today, however, did I start listening to his music at The Flashbulb. This particular piece has been a joy to work to... almost suspended animation.

... and now for something completely different.

It started as an experiment, emulating the systems music of Steve Reich, Terry Reilly, and even Philip Glass. Marimbas galore! It deviated from any systems and took on its own life. I followed it, adding crunchy electronics and stuttering voices. Under headphones, it hypnotizes and feels like a certain slice of America, circa 1972.

Happy Birthday Laurie Anderson.

The year was 1984, and I was living (briefly, although it felt like forever) in a hotel, during a transition period of a family move. All of life felt like a transition period for several years, there. Anyway, there was little for a 13 year old lad to do during that time. No school, no friends... just TV, video games and whatever magazines I could find at the K-Mart across the street. One such magazine was called MUSICIAN and this issue featured someone named Laurie Anderson. While there was no way for me to hear this person at the time (this was even pre-compact disc, folks) her words and the photos had me totally intrigued. A short time later I saw Laurie's videos on MTV and was hooked. This wasn't pop music, this wasn't stuffy classical music. I had no definition for what she created, and that was pretty fab! I had the great delight of seeing/hearing Laurie perform 3 times over the following couple of decades.

Thanks for everything Laurie Anderson.

Some nerdy fun for fellow humans that like to make music with machines or just appreciate music made by people with machines and that feel that music made by people with machines is a valid form or creativity and expression and that a guitar is also a machine albeit a mechanical one... that's a long non-sentence.

Anyway... here's Benn Jordan talking about Aphex Twin and some of that crazy software that Mr James used. It's enjoyable if you like this sort of thing.
