What do senior living residents actually want? It’s simpler, and far less disruptive, than most operators think... 💭
The next generation of older adults is approaching senior living with an entirely different mindset. Boomers and Gen Xers aren't just moving in—they're hiring senior living operators to provide a better life.
But as Jack Cu***ng points out in his latest article, shifting the marketing narrative is only step one. Contemplating that the real challenge lies in shifting the community culture 🤔:
✅ From "Patients" to Citizens: Residents don't want to be a corporate nuisance managed by a distant office. They want to be seen, heard, and respected as equals.
🚫 Refusing Identity Erasure: Moving into a community shouldn't mean "resident" becomes a person's entire identity. Purpose, contribution, and belonging don't expire at move-in.
🏡 Away from The Rise of Alternatives: The growth of co-housing, cooperatives, and the Village Movement shows that if traditional senior living won't offer dignity and autonomy, consumers will find models that do.
The providers who thrive in the coming years will be the ones who realize they are collaborative partners in a resident's life, not strict custodians of it. Treating residents as equals is the only path forward. 🫶
