Today is my mom’s birthday.

She’s been gone for a while now, but somehow I still feel her all around—especially in the quiet, simple things. This morning I was out picking blueberries, surrounded by nothing but stillness, sunshine, and the sound of summer.

She always loved hummingbirds. She used to say they were her favorite—tiny, fast, magical little messengers.

And then something happened that I’ll never forget.

I held out my hand, just instinctively, with a blueberry in it. And a hummingbird—a real one—flew right up to me. It hovered so close, it almost took the blueberry from my hand.

They never do that.

But this one did.

And in that small, unbelievable moment, I felt like she was there. With me. Watching. Smiling. Maybe even saying, “Hi, sweetheart. I’m still here.”

There are moments that break you open in the most beautiful way. This was one of them.
