The Scripps Voice

The Scripps Voice The Scripps Voice is Scripps College’s bimonthly student newspaper. We serve as a forum for news and opinions within the Claremont Colleges (5C) community.

More than a paper promoting neutrality and objectivity, we strive to be a platform for radical voices, creative perspectives, marginalized identities, and uncompromising activism. We are Scripps College’s official newspaper and our goal is to offer a platform for the diverse and remarkable voices of our student body. The Scripps Voice is published biweekly and is written, designed, edited, managed

, and produced entirely by Scripps students. Any and all 5C students and faculty are encouraged to write for us. Scripps College's founder and namesake, Ellen Browning Scripps, was herself a journalist during the 1860s and 1870s. Ellen Browning Scripps wrote for The Detroit Tribune and The Detroit Evening News in college and after graduating. Her daily columns ranged from news snippets to suffragette appeals. The Scripps Voice hopes to continue the tradition of outspoken feminist journalism that our school's namesake was notorious for, while adjusting our feminist lens for a newer, more intersectional era. The Editors-in-Chief for the 2017-2018 school year are Mel Gilcrest and Maureen Cowhey. We supplement our print coverage with online articles, blogs and reports, in order to allow students another medium of expression. The 2017-2018 academic year marks The Scripps Voice‘s twenty-first year of publication.

The Southern California A Capella Music Festival or, SCAMFest, was a huge hit. The eight 5C groups as well as groups from University of California Davis, University of Southern California, and University of California Los Angeles each performed two songs along with choreography that they created themselves.

"'The night included Mood Swing’s heartfelt take on Joji’s “Slow Dancing in the Dark” soloed by Avery Chen PO ’24, The Claremont Shade’s remarkable rendition of Hozier’s “Movement” soloed by Nithya Kumar PZ ’24, Midnight Echo’s chilling version of Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” headlined by Jadin Porter PO ’26 and Dominic Feder Di Toro PZ ’26, and ASS’ tear-jerking tribute to boygenius’ “Not Strong Enough” led by Izzy Gustitus ’26, Monty Ellwanger PO ’24, and Ben Baraga PO ’24." writes Copy Editor Intern Belén Yudess.

The summer of 2023 was definitely one to remember. Happening simultaneously were the Eras Tour, Renaissance Tour, the Barbie movie, allowing women all over the world to feel empowered and embrace their “girlhood.” But how does this fit into a world where women still have to fight for their bodily autonomy?

“The impact of that decision continues to loom heavily over the lives of young women. Abortion is now essentially banned in 14 states and heavily restricted in 11 others. Across the country, women have watched their access to reproductive healthcare and autonomy over their own lives slip out of their grasp before their very eyes.”

Topless at Tiernan, the student planned event that was supposed to happen on Oct. 6, was immediately frowned upon by Scripps administrators. Scripps students were surveilled by administrators and told to cover up if their tops were off. What should have been empowering and fun ended up being a frustrating and stifling experience for participants.

“The frustrating aspect was that having one’s b***s out wasn’t an issue, until the individual identified as female,” Social Media Manager Anna Odell ’27 and Staff Writer Chloe Swickard ’27 wrote in their Op-Ed piece. “This policy at its core appears anti-women and doesn’t align with Scripps’ usually gender-inclusive and accepting culture.”

Policy, Policy, Policy! Five Scripps Deans along with a panel of students met on Oct. 18, to discuss various goals and plans for Scripps. They worked closely to think of ways to admit a diverse student body while also taking into account the Supreme Court’s Affirmative Action ruling, ways of using funds, and finally, the new alcohol policy.

“Bradley explained that the policy was formed with a “harm reduction lens,” but conversations with students contributed to the ultimate decision to roll back the new policy. In these conversations, students identified how the revised policy could encourage underground activities involving alcohol or movement to other campuses to engage in activities involving alcohol.”

As of Oct. 27, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at the 5Cs is officially back! Newly appointed director Aidan Trulove has been working hard alongside the cast to update aspects of the show while maintaining its plot and integrity.

“I knew that I needed to do something different this year,” she said. “I was hoping to bring the experience of someone who was in multiple showings and who got to work with all the different casts and all the lovely people who did it last year. Being a director has basically allowed me to oversee the actors and technicians and just make sure everyone is getting as much joy out of it that I was able to.”

“Rocky Horror” has been a favorite for many, so make sure to check it out and visit our bio for the full story 📰✏️
