BE AWARE: Scammer poses as Eagle Times employee

CLAREMONT, N.H. — On Monday, Feb. 24, the Eagle Times notified the Claremont Police Department of a recent telephone scam involving a female caller pretending to be an Eagle Times employee soliciting credit card information for a subscription error.

The vishing scam is currently under investigation. Vishing, or voice phishing, is the act of impersonating a legitimate company in an attempt to obtain personal information.

The Eagle Times does not make outgoing phone calls regarding subscription renewals or account payments, nor do we store sensitive and personal information on our servers. Stripe, our third-party website payment software, has not had an active data breach that concerns us at this time.

“We are so dismayed to know that there are individuals assuming the identity of the Eagle Times in an attempt to financially harm our readers,” said Katlyn Proctor, general manager and managing editor of the Eagle Times. “While we believe this is an instance of someone seeking revenge against the press, we are taking it extremely seriously by working with the Claremont Police Department. Please know, we would never actively solicit payments over the phone out of the blue.”

As many of our readers are aware, the Eagle Times has not had operational telephones since December 2024, so our team does not possess the ability to make outgoing phone calls at this time. Instead, like always, our subscription renewals are mailed out every month, prompting subscribers to contact a member of our team directly to handle payment or visit us in-person at 27 Pleasant Street in Claremont.

For individuals seeking a secure way to pay in-person, our office is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

If you have questions or concerns, or to report that you’ve received a phone call, please reach out to General Manager Katlyn Proctor via email at [email protected].
