My series "Visors Up" is about the moments before the race, when the driver sits quietly in their machine. With the visor up we see the person. In their eyes I believe, we see who they are. Below is such a view of Mario Andretti, the only driver ever to win the Formula One World Chanpionship, Daytona 500, Indy 500 and 24 hours of Sebring. In short, Mario could drive anything. , ,

One of the all-time greats, Stan "The Man" Musial . Also one of the all-time great nicknames, it was given to him by Brooklyn Dodger fans during the 1946 season. Weary of him wearing out their pitchers all summer long they took to chanting, "Here comes that man again." Stan himself admitted in an interview he loved hitting at Ebbett's field and that he yasd hit " so many home runs there". Mind you, the Cards and Dodgers were locked in a tight race '46. Imagine being a Dodgers fan, sitting in the right field stands , thinking they might just beat the Cards, when your worst nightmare steps to the plate. "Oh no, not him again."

Continuing the series"Visors Up" this month.
A.J. Foyt seen here late in his career. It's hard to imagine now, but racers wore open faced helmets into the 1970's. Imagine that in an open cockpit.

Another in my series “Visor up”. Some drivers are easy to identify with the visor open, case in point 1986 Indianapolis 500 Champion Bobby Rahal. The dude had a serious death stare. And with the wire-rimmed glasses there could be no doubt who was behind the wheel.

“Pick your poison”

I love the simplicity of baseball in the pre-war years. The players jerseys were numbered by their spot in the batting order. 1-9. No last names needed. A fan would know that numbers 3-4-5 were the big boys, the heart of the order. In the late 20’s any pitcher who faced the Yankees would also face a particularly nasty choice. Whence, Pick your poison”.
Do you really want to walk #3 Babe Ruth to get to #4 Lou Gehrig?

Last year I was had the good fortune to work with Jimmy Buffett on the launch of his cruise ship Margaritaville at Sea. Over the course of 5 months with multiple trips aboard ship sailing to and from Grand Bahama we saw and did a lot of fun stuff. But what I remember most was being blown away at how kind and down to earth Jimmy was. It reminded me of the saying, “You can tell a lot about a person by how they treat the help.” By that measure he was one of the good guys. When he walked into a room everybody would light up. The crew would all smile and wave and shout greetings and he would repay all of that in kind with handshakes and selfies and a big smile. Standing behind my camera, I got the distinct impression that as happy as everyone was to see him, Jimmy was just as happy to see them. Pretty much the perfect note to end any show.
