Unsurprisingly, Steven Spielberg's latest movie won the weekend while familiar titles proved their staying power, and He-Man showed that he's not exactly the master of this universe.

Debuting at #1, DISCLOSURE DAY was in the most theaters and was the runaway bestseller on a per-theater basis. Those relative numbers are tempered, however, by the fact that SCARY MOVIE and BACKROOMS opened in less theaters and made more money (the latter made twice as much on a per-theater basis in its opening weekend). My guess is that DISCLOSURE DAY will have staying power, so its total box office draw will make the filmmakers happy nonetheless.

OBSESSION continues to impress by jumping from #4 to #2 in its 5th weekend of release. Its low-budget friend, BACKROOMS dropped considerably in the totals, but it still managed a #4 finish this weekend. When you start strong, you can afford a 50+% drop!

SCARY MOVIE dropped 74% from its impressive first weekend, but even such a big drop means that it still landed in the #3 position on this week's report. My guess is that it won't be appearing in next week's Top 5.

Speaking of massive drops, MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE fell 70% from its debut last weekend. The big-spectacle movie was beaten by three horror movies with a combined budget amounting to less than 25% of He-Man's origin story. I don't think we'll see a sequel in theaters anytime soon, but maybe this will create a renewed interest in the franchise in animated form?

Disclosure Day
If you found out we weren't alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people. We are coming close to … Disclosure Day.

Masters of the Universe
After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) back to Eternia where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto). To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man -- the most powerful man in the universe.

Scary Movie
Twenty-six years after outrunning a suspiciously familiar masked killer ("Ghostface"), the Core Four are back in the killer's crosshairs and no horror movie IP is safe. Marlon Wayans ("Shorty"), Shawn Wayans ("Ray"), Anna Faris ("Cindy"), and Regina Hall ("Brenda") reunite in Scary Movie alongside returning favorites and fresh faces to slash through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, anything with the word legacy in it, and every "final chapter" that absolutely isn't final. Nothing is sacred. No trope survives. Every line gets crossed. The Wayans are back to cancel the Cancel Culture.

Backrooms
A strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom.

Obsession
After breaking the mysterious "One Wish Willow" to win his crush's heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu
The Mandalorian and Grogu embark on an exciting adventure in the Star Wars universe. The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.

Michael
The cinematic portrayal of the life and legacy of one of the most influential artists the world has ever known. The film tells the story of Michael Jackson's life beyond the music, tracing his journey from the discovery of his extraordinary talent as the lead of the Jackson Five, to the visionary artist whose creative ambition fueled a relentless pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world. Highlighting both his life off-stage and some of the most iconic performances from his early solo career, the film gives audiences a front-row seat to Michael Jackson as never before. This is where his story begins.

The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act
The viral internet sensation "The Amazing Digital Circus" comes to its long-awaited conclusion in a feature-length theatrical release! This "Last Act" combines episode 8 with the all new, hour long episode 9 for fans to see before anyone else in the world. With Caine gone and the circus dark, the cast are left with only the mistakes and traumas of their pasts to keep them company. As the prospect of eternity closes in around them, they discover the truth about the Digital Circus and its history. Will they come to terms with what they uncover, or will they make… the other choice? Also, presumably at some point someone says something funny, because this ending can't be THAT depressing, can it?

The Breadwinner
Comedian Nate Bargatze stars as Nate Wilcox, whose wife Katie (Mandy Moore) lands a once-in-a-lifetime deal on Shark Tank that takes her on a prolonged business trip - and now the lifelong breadwinner has to fend for his family as a first-time stay-at-home dad. With three young daughters and little experience handling their day-to-day needs, Nate finds out quickly that running the household is the toughest gig he's ever had.

Pressure
In the tense 72 hours before D-Day, and the fate of the free world hanging in the balance, General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Captain James Stagg face an impossible choice--launch the largest and most dangerous invasion in history or risk losing the war altogether.

The Sheep Detectives
George Hardy (Hugh Jackman) is a shepherd who loves his sheep and raises them only for their wool. Every night he reads aloud a murder mystery, pretending his sheep can understand, never suspecting that not only can they understand but they argue for hours afterwards about whodunnit. When George is found dead under mysterious circumstances, the sheep realize at once that it was a murder and think they know everything about how to go about solving it. The local cop Tim Derry (Nicholas Braun), on the other hand, has never solved a serious crime in his life, so the sheep conclude they will have to solve it themselves, even if it means leaving their meadow for the first time and facing the fact that the human world isn't as simple as it appears in books.

Power Ballad
When Rick (Paul Rudd), a past-his-prime wedding singer, meets fading boy-band star Danny (Nick Jonas) during a gig, the two bond over music and a late-night jam session. But when Danny turns one of Rick's songs into the hit that reignites his career, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves - even if it means risking everything he cares about.

The Furious
After the daughter of Wang Wei (Xie Miao) is kidnapped by a criminal network and he receives no help from the corrupt police, Wei sets out on a rampage to find her himself. His only ally is Navin (Joe Taslim) – a relentless journalist whose wife has mysteriously disappeared. Fueled by a furious vengeance, the unlikely duo ruthlessly fights against the kidnappers in this martial arts showdown.

Stop! That! Train!
Best friends Tess (Ginger Minj) and DeeDee (Jujubee) are train stewardesses who trade their dreary shifts on the Stank Rail for the glitzy Glamazonian Express. When a catastrophic "Stormaganza" threatens to derail the high-speed train and crash it into Los Angeles, the duo in coach must join forces with the snobby first class attendants (Symone, Brooke Lynn Hytes, Marcia Marcia Marcia) and President Gagwell (RuPaul) to save the day.

20 years ago today, one of my all-time favorite Pixar movies was released!

is a great reason to revisit Radiator Springs soon!

Lightning McQueen, a hotshot rookie race car driven to succeed, discovers that life is about the journey, not the finish line, when he finds himself unexpectedly detoured in the sleepy Route 66 town of Radiator Springs. On his way across the country to the big Piston Cup Championship in California to compete against two seasoned pros, McQueen gets to know the town's offbeat characters--including Sally, a snazzy 2002 Porsche, Doc Hudson, a 1951 Hudson Hornet with a mysterious past, and Mater, a rusty but trusty tow truck voiced, who help him realize that there are more important things than trophies, fame and sponsorship.

The weekend was a frightening place, with three "scary" movies in the Top 5 list!

extends the horror-comedy franchise with a sixth installment from the Wayans brothers. The movie scored $55M and a #1 debut (even though it pales in comparison to BACKROOMS from last weekend). Speaking of the surprise hit from last weekend, it took a 68% hit from last weekend, but that still kept it in the #3 position and it now ranks as its studio's top grossing movie worldwide. Rounding out the scary movie trio, landed at #4 after dropping just 3% from last weekend.

MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE didn't exactly live up to expectations on this scary weekend, but it still took the #2 spot in the Box Office Report. Will it do better this coming weekend? Not if Steven Spielberg has anything to say about it...

Finishing off the Top 5 list is the Fathom Entertainment release of THE AMAZING DIGITAL CIRCUS: THE LAST ACT. It certainly seems like the Internet is winning in movie theaters right now.
