The Angel Tree is up at Ken's in Clark!

Christmas is a time of lights, laughter, gifts and gatherings. But for families facing financial hardship, the holiday is marred by a shadow of despair. That is why the Clark County ICAP and the people of Clark have joined together to keep the feelings of love, joy and hope alive and lifted the Angel Tree in our community for another year! For over 20 years, this tree has been a well-received and appreciated tradition for gift givers and receivers alike.

This year, the tree has 30 tags with names of children in need. It lists the child's age, gender, clothing size and a few wishful items like toys. The tree is located at Ken's Food Fair in Clark. Gifts are to be wrapped and turned in to the ICAP Used 2B New Store in Clark by Wednesday, December 10. This way, the gifts are delivered to the families the week before Christmas. "We have a good turnout of participation for this project," says ICAP volunteer Bonnie Kloster. "The citizens within the county are very generous. We have never had a problem getting a gift for all the children in need."

Reggie Dabbs motivates Clark and Willow Lake students.

On Wednesday, November 12, sixth through twelfth grade students at both Willow Lake and Clark became the audience for motivational speaker Reggie Dabbs. In his second time visiting, Dabbs spoke with Willow Lake students in the morning, Clark students in the afternoon, and community members in the evening. His theme? "You can never change your past, but you can change your future." This was his second time visiting the community.

He began the assembly by playing his saxophone, and filled the gym with energy, singing and clapping. With music he bridged a connection with the students, and he soon had students repeating after him, "My life is in my hands—your life is in your hands." Dabbs reminded the students that life was a roller coaster, but what was important was that everyone had the ability to shape their own future. He shared is own personal story growing up as a foster child, then he opened up for a brief Q&A session before sharing that this was his farewell tour after being a speaker for 41 years.

The CHS yearbook takes top honors at the South Dakota High School Press Convention.

Held on October 20, 2025, at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, Clark's 2024-2025 yearbook received the only Superior rating in a competition against 15 other yearbooks. The Clark High School 2024-2025 yearbook staff included editor Kaden Janisch, Keeghan Beaudry and Levi Whitney. Kristin Janisch has been the yearbook advisor for the last 10 years, and now Clark has won the contest three times under Janisch's supervision. The competition has a lengthy scoring rubric, as things like writing, designs, concepts, themes, captions and edits are carefully analyzed. When the award ceremony commenced, both students and advisors waited anxiously to see if their school annuals would receive high marks. "We were watching all the school names show up on the big screen for the Excellent-rated yearbook category and then Clark popped up as the top-scoring book. I was waiting for the list of Superiors to start, but we were the only one," Janisch said. This is the second year in a row that the CHS yearbook is named 'Best in State.'

Below are the yearbook staff with their top honors plaque they received at the S.D. High School Convention last month in Vermillion. The CHS yearbook staff is excited to create another memorable yearbook and hopefully have another chance at a top honors yearbook in 2026. The Clark Day of Giving generously helps local people in need.

Two local individuals are determined to maintain a community of generosity: Dale Albright and Gayle Wookey. They are the team behind the planning, organizing and coordinating of a community-wide fundraising effort known as the Clark Day of Giving. "This is the seventh year of the project, and we are gearing up for another meaningful event," says Wookey. Over the course of the month, the community holds fundraising events of all kinds. Then, the monies raised are redistributed within the community to organizations that need them to continue helping the residents within the Clark County. The organizers of the Day of Giving have included a request flier in the November 5 issue of the Clark County Courier. "This flier will reach approximately 1,500 households in Clark county and beyond," explained Albright.

Events like he Penny War have begun at the Clark Elementary School, organized by the Clark Community Foundation. The winning class receives a pizza party, and last year the students raised $1,624 for the community. The Clark Lions Club will be holding a pancake feed on Sunday, November 23, at the Clark Legion Hall. On Wednesday, November 26, the community bake sale and burger feed will take place at the Plymouth Congregational Church hosted by the Clark Rotary Club and the Clark Community Foundation. These, along with other events, will help bring funds to organizations such as the Clark Fire Department, Special Olympics, Clark Area Tragedy Fund, school programs for students in need and many, many more. "These programs together make such a difference in the quality of life for the citizens of Clark county, and this is our way to support their work and express our gratitude to them," says Wookey.
