Clark's new motel brings a blend of modern comfort and small-town hospitality.

Located on the east side of town on U.S. Highway 212, Ellen and Chance Walford's new motel has officially opened. The couple had originally planned to build in Henry, but they were drawn in by Clark's year-round opportunity for bookings from hunters, golfers, families and even companies. The 10-room complex features full kitchenettes, private thermostats, fireplaces, nightlights and wireless phone chargers. Two of the rooms are handicap-accessible suites with zero-threshold showers, grab bars and extra maneuvering space. There is also a coin-operated laundromat that both guests and community members can use. For now, booking is done by phone through Ellen Walford directly with online booking in future plans.

Raymond's second annual Redwing Days were held over the weekend.

Beginning July 11 and ending on July 12, Raymond's Redwing Days brought the little town to life with fun, competition and community. There was a kickoff event Friday night featuring the return of the 3 P's event: Pizza, Pitcher of Beer and Puzzle. Saturday was in full swing with a Color Run/Walk, Firemen's Breakfast, vendor fair, petting zoo, foam party and Farm Olympics to name a few. The highlight was the Pigeon Auction and Race, where 12 pigeons were auctioned to teams. The birds were then released to return to Watertown, and the first to arrive granted the team a cash prize. There was also a parade down Flower Street that featured vintage cars, bikes, and even a horse. Proceeds from the weekend go towards improving the community of Raymond; organizers thank everyone that participated and contributed to make Raymond Redwing Days possible.

Clark woman murdered; Fladland is charged with murder.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley announced on Wednesday, July 9 that Bowen Fladland, a Clark resident, has been charged with First-Degree Murder and Second-Degree Murder in the death of his mother, Marlene Fladland of Clark. According to KELO, Bowen Fladland already had prior criminal charges, among them an assault charge in 2023 where he'd harmed his mother. During a post-Miranda interview, the probable cause affidavit states, "Fladland admitted to assaulting his mother, kneeling on her neck until she was apparently deceased and then used a tool to remove her head." South Dakota General Attorney General Marty Jackley asks that the public continue to stay away from the crime scene so ongoing investigations can be completed.

South Dakota's Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is leading the investigation with the assistance of the Clark Police Department. The case will be prosecuted by the Attorney General's Office and the Clark County State's Attorney's Office. Below is a photo of Bowen Fladland.

Willow Lake's Fourth of July parade is a main street miracle.

Parades consist of five essential elements: float builders, hand wavers, candy throwers, cheering onlookers and in South Dakota, tractors. On July 4, Willow Lake had just that. John and Franchesca Tomasich from Green Bay, Wisc., had decided to visit family and participate in the small town celebration. John is the son of former Willow Lake native Grace Schmidt Tomasich. But what started out as a plan to simply admire the parade, turned into being in the parade whenthe Tomasiches learned a float was in need of a driver.

Fifteen minutes before the parade began, Tomasich was surprised by the lack of people on main street. Yet, the bigger surprise was the moment they began and found the same street crowded with hundreds of people awaiting their arrival. "We were speechless," he said. After the parade ended, the Willow Lake Fire Department dazzled the sky with their annual fireworks display. The following day, the department followed up with their drive-through burger and hotdog fundraiser. John Tomasich says he will never forget that 'main street miracle', and looks forward to coming back.

Gunnar Kvistad conquers the Black Hills 100.

The 2022 Clark High School graduate decided to challenge himself after hearing about the 100-mile race from a friend that had participated previously. With prior knowledge about training from wrestling, cross country and track, Kvistad looked forward to the goal of completing the 108-mile course that began in Sturgis, S.D., went to Silver City, and returned back. There were also 50-mile, 50-kilometer and 30-kilometer races that were held June 27 and 28. Kvistad covered the course in 32:41.41 and placed 26th overall in the men's 20-29 age division. During the race, Kvistad faced 17,000 feet of elevation gain/loss, nearly 90 degree temperatures, as well as physical and mental exhaustion. Regardless, Kvistad accomplished his ultimate goal of finishing the race; he attributes this success to his training program and the support of his parents that were with him for the race.
