Pinebelt Blues is a distinctive blues style pioneered by Mississippi native Ra’Shad The Blues Kid, rooted in the rich musical traditions of the Pine Belt region. This genre blends soulful, rhythmic guitar work with quartet-style undertones, creating a sound that is both deeply expressive and uniquely regional. Ra’Shad’s music captures the essence of storytelling, resilience, and joy that defines the blues, while also carving out a modern and personal sound. Ra’Shad’s 2025 live album, Live in Clarksdale, exemplifies Pinebelt Blues through tracks like “Singing the Blues,” where he reflects on personal hardships with lines such as “I just got the news, that another mule has been kicking in my stall,”. His performances often evoke the communal and celebratory atmosphere of juke joints, inviting listeners to experience the music’s emotional depth and cultural roots. Pinebelt Blues stands alongside other regional blues styles like Hill Country and Delta Blues, offering a fresh yet authentic contribution to the genre. The album was recorded Live at the Ground Zero club in Clarksdale and is self-produced.

Sam Chatmon, who was born on this day c. 1899, was a celebrated singer and guitarist who spent most of his life in Hollandale, and sometimes performed with his brothers in a renowned family string band billed as the Mississippi Sheiks. After blues enthusiasts began to seek Chatmon out in the 1960s, he traveled to play concerts and festivals around the country, most often in the San Diego area, and recorded several albums including "Hollandale Blues" and "The Mississippi Sheik." He grew a long beard, as his fiddle-playing father had done, and endeared himself to new audiences who were entertained by his risqué double-entendre songs. In 2009 the city of Hollandale purchased Chatmon’s house at 818 Sherman Street to move it to “Blue Front,” an area once famed for blues, liquor, and gambling. Chatmon sang about Blue Front in his song “Hollandale Blues,” but told friends he preferred less rowdy surroundings. Sam Chatmon Blues Festival
