I need to be very real and vulnerable for a moment. Because that is the person I am. 💌
And before anyone takes this the wrong way, please understand that this is coming from a place that has genuinely hurt me for a long time. To every person I run into, whether you've known me for years or you're meeting me for the first time, one of the very first things I hear is, "WOW, you're so skinny!""You've gotten SO thin!" "You need to put some weight on!"
And I wish people understood just how much those words can hurt. We live in a world where commenting on someone's weight when they're overweight is considered rude, hurtful, and disrespectful. But for some reason, when someone is naturally small, people think it's perfectly acceptable to point it out.
Body shaming goes BOTH ways.
What people don't realize is that I have struggled for YEARS to keep weight on. Do I wish I could gain another 10 or 15 pounds? ABSOLUTELY. Do I look in the mirror some days and wish I had a little more weight on me? YES.
But here's the thing I AM JUST A SMALL PERSON. PERIOD.
Yes, I was bigger in high school. Yes, my body has changed over the years. But that doesn't mean there is something wrong with the person standing in front of you today.
I work my absolute ASS off. Day in and day out. My job is physically demanding. I'm walking miles, working horses, lifting, hauling, cleaning, sweating, and constantly moving. This isn't a job where I sit behind a desk all day. My body works HARD for everything I do, and I burn an incredible amount of energy doing what I love.
And while I am incredibly proud of how hard I work, that doesn't mean I don't have insecurities about my own body. What hurts the most is that people don't realize they're pointing out something I'm already struggling with.
You might say, "Wow, you're so skinny!" and forget about it five minutes later. But I might go home and think about those words for HOURS.
I might look in the mirror and question myself.
I might wonder if everyone else sees me the same way. And yes, sometimes I cry about it. More than most people will ever know. 💔
I'm not writing this because I want sympathy. I'm writing this because I want people to understand that just because someone is thin doesn't mean they're confident about being thin.
Not every skinny girl is trying to be skinny. Not every small person wants to be smaller. And not every comment about someone's body is a compliment, even if that's how you intended it.
I'm a hardworking woman. I'm a wife. I'm a momma. I'm a horse trainer. I'm someone who puts her heart and soul into everything she does. There are SO many things about me worth noticing before you notice the number on a scale.
So the next time you see me, please don't make my weight the first thing we talk about. Ask me how I'm doing. Ask me about my horses. Ask me how life is going. Heck, just tell me it's good to see me!
Because I promise you, those words would mean SO much more. I'm not asking anyone to walk on eggshells around me. I'm simply asking people to be a little more mindful of the things they say.
You never know what someone is silently struggling with, even when they look perfectly fine to you. I'm small. I've always had a smaller frame. And I'm doing my best to love the body that works so dang hard for me every single day. But some days, those comments make that a whole lot harder than it needs to be.
Please remember, skinny doesn't automatically mean happy with your body. And words hurt, no matter what size you are. ❤️
Sorry I just am really feeling to the point this needed to be said. It hurts more than people realize. 💔
